GSA awards U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters contract to Clark Construction

Today the GSA announced that they had chosen Clark Construction and HOH Architecture to be the lead team for the construction of the new U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington D.C.'s River East Neighborhood.

This project consists of two phases with the first phase ground breaking now scheduled for this month with construction to commence in earnest after the first of the year.

The GSA is using funding from the FY 2009 Appropriations and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ("Recovery Act") of 2009 to fund the project.

The Coast Guard Headquarters will be located on the St. Elizabeth's Hospital West Campus and next to the proposed site for the Dept. of Homeland Security Headquarters.   It is expected that DHS's headquarters project will also "kickoff" within the next 6-12 months.

Completion of the project is anticipated by 2013.

One of the features of this project is the development of a new direct access to the campus from the 295 beltway.  While there are several issues to still be worked out, the picking of the team is strong evidence that over $1,000,000,000 in federal funds are going to be invested in the River East area of Washingtion D.C. in the next 5-8 years.  These investments combined with significant investments by the District in infrastructure, housing, parks, transportation in the area in the next 5 years are going to create many jobs for local area residents, construction activities alone are forecast to create 32,000 new jobs!
