Rachel Adams : Finding Yourself In Real Estate
Traveling. Attending Growth Seminars. Leading and Living a healthy lifestyle. Serving as an ambassador against local sex trafficking for a non-profit organization. Hosting Female Empowerment Events. Put these all in your calendar and your list of things to do and you’ll probably see one or two items slowly go down the drain because you have managed to take for granted the little things. On top of these activities, put in your career in Real Estate, your time for your family and friends, your social life and extracurricular activities and your passion for coaching other agents in becoming the best versions of themselves. Where will you find the time? Rachel Adams seems to have the answers. With all these activities in her to do list, she still manages to excel in her real estate career and at the same time, complete all the tasks listed above. Amazing.
“I realized that if I really truly wanted to lead an extraordinary life, then I needed to make a change.” This is the highlight of my interview with one Rachel Adams. She has been successful in everything that she puts her mind into. However, as she hinted, it wasn’t always this way. These things only happened after she decided to make some changes in her life in order to make it extraordinary. In her Lost to Found in 90 days Program, Rachel emphasizes that she’s not trying to change just 90 days of a person’s life, in fact, the 90 days are just the stepping stones for the person to fully change their life and the way they view it. Rachel has been sharing this during her coaching sessions with Real Estate Agents all around the United States. Success is not overnight. Excellence is a habit. These are the little things that people tend to overlook. In their drive to success, most people give too much focus on the effort and not on the goal. Rachel is all about the little things that have big impact – the little things that make a difference.
Rachel underwent a divorce that she did not see coming and was in a gutter for quite a while. A good friend who was interviewing her at that time noticed this during an interview and instead of pushing for the interview, they talked. This talk was the foundation of a book that has helped so many other people - Lost to Found in 90 Days: Your Journey to Self-Discovery and Ultimate Happiness. Here, Rachel talked about the things that matter and the things that distract you from the things that matter. In the book, the reader will then be asked what are the two things that distract you the most and prevent you from getting your goal? Once you have identified those two things, the challenge now is to overcome the distraction they bring. The book is informative and very interactive. However, the thing that caught my attention the most is Rachel’s 4 Steps to Success. The first step is identifying what your goal is – what you want to happen and when. Once you have a clear picture of your goal, you already have a direction to go to. In real estate, the most common goal an agent can make is to “sell houses.” This is also the most common mistake. The goal should be specific enough for you to realize that exerting effort towards achieving this goal is not a waste of time. Example, where others wish to be able to sell houses, your goal should be something as specific as “To be able to sell 24 houses valued at over $1,000,000.00 before the end of the year.” You have not only given yourself a deadline, you have also set a clear picture of what you would want to accomplish before the end of the year. Second Step is identifying what you can do to hit the goal. When people aim to just being able to sell houses, their daily routine will suffice. You can never expect extraordinary things from ordinary efforts. In this step, you have to make sure that you have already done everything to reach your goal. If you haven’t hit your goal yet, then you probably haven’t done everything yet. What can you do to hit your goal? Think outside the box. Let’s ride the cliché for a moment. When you have been doing something over and over again, you should not expect different results. The only time that you can expect something different is if you’ve done something equally different. If you haven’t reached your goal, it is almost always because you have not done everything yet. Know your goal and know what you need to do. Let’s go to the third step – gauge yourself. How did you do? From time to time, you should be doing an audit of the distance that you’ve traveled, how far you have gone and how much farther you have to go. This will allow you to evaluate things that worked and things that didn’t. This will allow you to identify what things you’ve done that provided more traction so that you will be able to modify these action plans to your advantage. Doing an audit will allow you some well-deserved rest and recognition after you have painstakingly gone through the first two steps. Reward yourself and appreciate your efforts. After the reward and the appreciation, you have to get yourself ready again because the fourth step will again prompt you to plan and take action. You then ask yourself a question, “What can I do tomorrow that I didn’t do today to achieve that goal?” Easier said than done considering that at this point, you have already probably exhausted everything you could think of, inside or outside the box. However, you have to keep in mind that although your brain can work wonders and your determination is strong, you also the option to get a sounding board, a person who counters your ideas and comes up with obstacles. This will get your brain going. You can come up with an idea, narrate it to the devil’s advocate and listen as to how he shoots down your idea with obstacles. You get to learn from this activity. Sometimes, being strong means asking for help. There is no shame in it. If you think you have already done everything, maybe a fresh set of eyes can see what you missed. It then becomes a cycle of continuous improvement.Rachel Adams is the co-founder of Aitchison & Adams Real Estate team at Keller Williams Realty.
