Self-Directed IRA Investing

Since 1989 I’ve worked for both small and large corporations, each providing healthcare benefits and standard retirement plans. These retirement plans were typical 401k’s where the investor randomly picked from a field of stocks and bonds. During my participation with these plans I experienced highs and lows, profits and losses, but always uncertainty.

Now fast forward to 2016. Through my current employer I’ve discovered that you can take those same dollars and “direct” them towards hard assets such as gold, notes and real estate. Instead of gambling on projected earnings of company “A” or “B” and riding the wave of an unsteady stock market I would be able to select an investment property, purchase it through a Self-Directed IRA, have it managed to generate yields higher than CDs, savings accounts, and avoid the volatility of the stock market. And at the end of the day, hand it down to my children as a perpetual asset in a Roth IRA. This type of investment made sense to accomplish my short and long term retirement goals.

There are many companies (custodians) who can help you set up your Self-Directed IRA (New Direction, Quest, Vantage, etc.). But remember, be sure and vet each thoroughly to ensure they’re a good fit for you as each will vary in terms of fees, check writing ability, etc.

Like all investments there is no silver bullet solution. Unforeseen issues will arise no matter what road you travel. But with a Self-Directed IRA you control where your money is spent and how it is spent. Look into a Self-Directed or Roth IRA for you and your loved ones - it may just change your life now and for your family’s future.
