5 types of negative mindsets to overcome for success
“What we think, we become” Buddha, 500 B.C
Some might believe that the term MINDSET just the newest internet buzzword – Yet, The principles of Mindset and the Law of Attraction are not new at all.
These principles have been in practice for centuries by some of the most spiritual and successful leaders of all time.
Mindset really & truly has an affect on your path in life – Your mindset can lead you to the gutter or down the yellow brick road – and this choice is all yours to make.
According to Dictionary.com, the definition of mindset is this;
“A FIXED MENTAL ATTITUDE OR DISPOSITION THAT PREDETERMINES A PERSON’S RESPONSES TO AND INTERPRETATIONS OF SITUATIONS.”
Last week we discussed Fixed Mindset versus Growth… meaning that people generally operate from one of those two general head spaces.
Today I want to dive deeper into some specific negative patterns of thought that take place in the fixed mindset world. I also want to talk about the steps that you can take to overcome them.
First, let’s start by looking at 5 negative mindsets:
- Fear Mindset
- Laziness Mindset
- Envy Mindset
- Greed Mindset
- Short-Term Mindset
1. Fear Mindset
“One challenge at a time, I try to turn into the face of fear and tell it “you are not my master, you are the product of myself and I am your master.” I look into the monster’s eyes until it disappears. Then I am free.” ― R. Shaw
- If you are experiencing fear, it likely means that you are about to do something outside of your comfort zone. But as I once heard, nothing great comes from comfort and ordinary.
- If you desire more, you may have to overcome fears of what could lie ahead.
- Things are only scary until you conquer them
2. Laziness Mindset
“We often miss opportunity because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work” ― Thomas A. Edison
It’s so easy to stay in our comfort zones and not push ourselves to do more or do better – But outstanding things never happen in a comfort zone. Even baby steps towards a goal will get us a tiny bit closer, day by day. Take a look a few things that you do each day that could be replaced by something more productive.
- Commute to work: listen to podcasts
- Having a bath: read a book
- Watching TV: Check out a business documentary instead
- Bored on the weekends: go to a networking event or course
The little things that you can do to replace your unproductive hours with productive ones is where the difference will be made.
3. Envy Mindset
“Envy is the religion of the mediocre. It comforts them, it soothes their worries, allowing them to justify their meanness and their greed until they believe these to be virtues”. – Carlos Ruiz Zafón
- People who are green with envy are generally the ones who haven’t overcome their own fears yet.
- Envy is a waste of energy and feeling – use your emotion as a motivator – not a distractor
4. Greed Mindset
“Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. Unsuccessful people are always asking, “What’s in it for me?” ― Brian Tracy
Greed is an extension of envy. People that are consumed by greed often feel that others don’t deserve to have what they have and the greedy feel like it belongs to them — even if they haven’t’ earned it.
Generosity and gratitude will always multiply your abundance
5. The Short-Term Mindset
Quote: “We can do things the cheap way, the simple way, for the short-term and without regard for the future. Or, we can make the extra effort, do the hard work, absorb the criticism and make decisions that will cause a better future” – Mike Rounds
Just like anything in life, you get what you pay for.
Short term mindset people will be the ones that buy used car for an amazing, rock bottom deal without any research
Because they are short sighted, they may not realize that the car has:
- too many miles,
- might not last them long,
- it could be a foreign car that will cost them a ton to fix,
- horrible on gas mileage
All of these factors — which will cost them more in the long run don’t matter to a short sighted person – they are dazzled by upfront, immediate gratification
Long – term mindset people look at the overall value of an experience or purchase and take the time to consider all factors.
