Estimated Reads For Utilities

Estimated Reads For Utilities

On our utility bills, I'm seeing "Estimated reading." I've seen investors say to watch out for estimated readings. What do I do if I see an estimated reading? Can we get money back for that? Why are people saying watch out for it?

An estimated read is the utility's guess, not necessarily an overcharge. Take a photo of the meter with the date visible and compare it to the bill. Ask the utility to take an actual reading and adjust the bill if the estimate was high. I'd keep both bills and the meter photo in case the next bill doesn't correct it.
