Growing up, I consistently helped my grandparents manage their four rental properties. My grandpa would take me to one of their buildings for the day and we would work on projects together. At 10 years old, I witnessed the exchange of rent from their residents to cash going into his pocket and cash going into mine for the days worth of work. This is what initially sparked my interest for the buy and hold aspect of REI. Many years later after graduating from college and moving to a new city where I was paying ~$850/month in rent for three years, I decided to start educating myself on buy and holds. The thought of dumping away over $30,000 of my hard earned money on rent made me sick. After educating myself just enough to feel comfortable, I pulled the trigger on my first duplex and got my first taste of the "I" quadrant.
