I have been investing in real estate since 1999. I started with what is now known as "house hacking". My first deal was a duplex - I live in one unit with a roommate and rented the other unit. I lived rent-free but not all was well. I lost everything in 2002-2003 but I've since recovered from that and have acquired about 3,000 apartment units. I've kept about 1,000 apartment units as part of my investment portfolio.
