I got started in a very unusual way. I wanted to learn the ins and outs of new construction so I could build myself a duplex and live in one side and rent out the other. I replied to an ad looking for experienced framing carpenters. When I told the guy I didn't have any experience he said he didn't need anyone else, even though he had already told me he needed two more guys. I told him I was a fast learner, good with math and would make him a deal. I would work for him for two weeks, if he didn't like the work I did he didn't owe me anything and we would part ways. And if he decided to keep me he could pay me what he wanted. Well lets just say he took advantage of the pay rate. But remember I had an ulterior motive, I was looking for an education. We were framing a million dollar house. Well I got such a good education that I quit working for him and started my own company 2 months later. I focused on nice average priced homes and didn't build that duplex but built a very successful residential construction business.
