The more interaction the better, but a lot of people join and end up not ever getting started in the real estate industry. Some people come here in search of an answer to a particular issue, and once they get the answer they do not continue to contribute to the community. A lot of people join but do not post; they are just interested in reading and gathering information.
Good question Doug...how do we get more people to contribute/participate? I had a multi-page thread about this several months ago.
I personally think that organizing local groups that feed into the community would help a great deal.

Brian, i see your original post was about a yr ago... why hasnt anything changed since then?
Josh and Co. are constantly coming up with improvements for the very issue you bring up. He is also great with taking suggestions, so if you have any let him know and he will consider adding it for the community.
I am a newer member and I try to contribute as often as possible. Often the topics being discussed have already been answered in a previous thread or post. With that being said, I've been logged on the website for MANY hours and I've only posted a handful of times.
I imagine many members use the search function to find the answers that they seek... I know I do.
Here's Bryan's thread:
How Do We Get More People To Engage In BP Discussions?
Aside from everything discussed there, I think the bottom line is that we really need more advocates. Many of the "core" group of contributors are vocal about the site, many are not.
Sharing BP via all the available means at your disposal - blogging (write about the site and why you think it is valuable), social (sharing BP or any of our pages or content on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, etc.), inviting your investor and other lists to join you here on the site, emailing your friends and colleagues -- would go a long way to get people more active.
I also think we need more discussions here, on our blogs, and on your own blogs headlined by our active and successful members (those who gain value), extolling the value in contributing here.
We've come a long way, and I believe that BP is second to none in the REI space, but this site can truly explode with knowledge, networking, and dealmaking if our members help us with these tasks. I'm only one guy running the show -- there's truly only so much I can do on my own.
Thoughts?

I don't reply on most posts because they are years ahead of my experiene and I really don't know the answer. The ones that ask for an opinion, I respond.
There are some investors as members on here that are very busy that I work with buying properties on occasion. They are flying all over the country looking at properties to purchase etc.
I only do deals in Georgia currently but they buy all over.
So I would assume some are real busy doing deals and only glance at the site occasionally as that's all they have time for. Some are just readers more than posters.
It's the way all forums work.
I know when I first found the site I spent some time reading everything and didn't post much for a while. I still don't post too often because I don't feel qualified on a lot of things. There are some things that I feel I can answer from my limited experience and I will give my opinion when that is what the OP is looking for. If I don't know an answer, I know someone else on BP will so I don't waste anyone's time writing a response.
What people are missing out on is the value that comes from posting. The gold of social media is that you have to be an active participant. While there is value in reading, where you begin to build your network, your brand, your business - is by participating and having people see and get to know you.
I can't stress enough how important that is.
Those people are are most active have figured it out . . . some may call it gaming, but what they are doing is using the platform to build their business.
AND every one of our most active members can share stories of how doing so has brought an incredibly amount of value to them - in one way or another.
Maybe real estate investors need more information on the power of all of this? Thoughts?
Perhaps I need to do a webinar or something to help explain it?

I can tell you from first hand experience that BP brings excellent links to my main site as I write blogs articles or post houses on my site. I have also extended my network of colleagues that i look to for answers and advice from being active on BP.
It is hard, and activity can ebb and flow, but for the second half of 2011, I have a little personal goal of opening BP each morning and just checking in to see if I can comment on a post or add to a thread.
I also do not use BP as my main blog or article listing, bu it something I would like to do more of. It would be great to get more inter-action, but i can tell you that it is already extremely valuable to businesses who deal with investors and can only get more valuable.
Josh - Are there social media links on our articles and blog posts? I believe I have seen them on the blog, but don't recall seeing the on the articles. I would love to have easy access to share the articles I like on m FB, Linked In and twitter accounts.
I will check now, but wanted to ask it on here so others would know the answer as well.

Chris -
Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Next week we'll be revamping our registration process and re-integrating Facebook/Twitter (and hopefully Google Plus) into the site. We've had to take a few things down in the past week in preparation for this move. Once complete, we should have social sharing links across the site once again.
That said, currently, there is a share button at the top of all forum pages (rt side) and we do have them on the BiggerPockets Blog as well as a few other places. I do encourage everyone to share when possible!

Chris, i understand where you are coming from. That was the main reason for my joining this site... I have known for a long time that 1 of my weaknesses was networking... well this year i made it 1 of my top goals.. No matter how busy i am, i make an effort to view the posts daily and try to contribute... I know i am new on here but everyone will get to know me... Thanks
Hey Douglas - I know I mentioned this to you already, but having a complete profile and pic will go a long way to help you get going with networking -- with an empty profile, people have no way to look you up in our search to learn more about you. Just something to consider . . . the reason I bring it up again, is also so any others who also have an empty profile can understand that they are doing themselves a disservice if they want to be found by others looking to connect.

Thanks, i think that the only thing that i am missing is a pic. Let me know if i missing something else that i need to work on.
i used to be a lot more active..i've been very busy lately with rehabs.it's been a very busy and awesome summer for me :) ...99% sit on the sidelines while the other 1% take action..be that `1% :)
I'm glad to hear that you're busy, Bryan. I know that when things slow down, you'll be right back here with the rest of us. Congrats on the continued success...
BTW - Bryan is an example of another BP member who has gotten a TON of value from being active on the site.

I want to ask some questions but I can't post any topic until I have 5 posts... this is discouraging
Kevin - The only places where you'd be restricted from posting is in our Advertising and Dealmaking areas. If you're looking to pose questions, you can do that in any of our other forums.
