The GTO might be considered the best muscle car ever built so yeah it's sad.
I had a 67 GTO and currently have a Pont Firehawk. One of only 500 buillt in 94-- 425 HP. modified. Even though I bought a Hennessey 650 HP Viper 2 years ago, I couldn't part with the Firehawk. I'm glad Pontiac built those cars. Rich
I'm having having a stroke...no more Firebirds? Ever? :(
yeah the problem is, nobody thinks highly of pontiacs made since 1990. When do you ever hear anyone rave about a pontiac made in the past 20 years? It's always the 60s, 70s, and sometimes 80s models. GM turned it into a crappy economy car and now we're living in the age of everyone wanting to have more expensive toys than their neighbors
Yeah I agree the Pontiacs of today aren't no where near the level they were from the 60's to the 80's.
GM has to dump some of these brands, and all the corresponding overhead. There's no difference between Chevy, Buick, Pontiac, or Oldsmobile (now dead). There's no difference between Chevy Trucks and GMC. It makes no sense to support all these different brands with marketing and dealerships. Looks like they will end up with Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac. Really, two brands would be sufficient, unless they can really differentiate these three.
Again, the Pontiac Firehawk I own and bought in 94 is a great car. One of only 500 built. There were 250 in 93, 500 in 94, 750 in 95 and 1000 in 96. These went directly from Pontiac straight to SLP( street legal performance) in NJ,, where modifications were made and then sent to customer. I LOVE MINE!! I Then Pontiac took the sexy out of it by dumping SLP and attempting their own version, the Ram Air.
I know a company can't survive on a brand that only sells 250-1000 units, but this was in response to "never a good model since the 60s". The motor used, the 5.7 liter is one of the easiest to pump up. I've pumped mine twice to over 425 hp. It is scary, due to no weight in back and sounds great with the cam etc.
Only problem is my wife makes me park it outside since garage is a 2-car. My Hennessey Viper and her scrawny little SUV!! I have to probably sell it to keep her happy , or get rid of her. Not likely after 39 years, lol.Rich
I had a used 89 Pontiac Firebird, which I bought when it was 4 years old. What a gas-guzzling piece o' cr@p.
I also had a 1987 Pontiac Safari wagon which I also bought used (2 years old). It was constantly overheating and then the tranny went. Also a piece o' cr@p.
No wonder they're going out of business. Except it should have happened a long time ago. The only decent car they made recently was the Pontiac Vibe, which is basically a Toyota Matrix with a different name tag.
