It has been in the news a lot recently about Iran's current leaders and their contempt toward the west!

Could things be changing? It appears the country is uprising against the leaders!!!!

See this news report.

The revolution generation has to die off. They're getting there, but not old enough yet. It's like us and the "revolutionary" hippies and they're outdated crap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jTmgLgDEo4&feature=related. The younger generation is different. To them, being in a theocracy, Islam is not so much a religion as it is a registration. That, plus with the internet - they do know what they're missing now and discontent is growing.

Don't forget that over 50% of the population is under 25 years old. The youth of Iran see modern life and want to live in a modern society, not one where women are worth 50% of a man, etc.

It is moments like this one, where you start to realize that we're all just fighting to be human. The sham of an election in Iran really boils my blood. To allude to a post by MikeOH asking what is worth fighting for -- I think we're seeing it happen right now in Iran - people are fighting for their right to exist as other free people do. It is an incredible thing.

I have heard, from an author that has traveled in Iran, that the black market satellite TV business is the most lucrative niche in Iran. And that most women under 40 in Iran wear the traditional garb to work, and once they get home, change into shorts and tank-tops and watch western DVDs and listen to western music.

Also, Ahmadinejad is becoming Iran's version of Nicolai Ceausescu, the Romanian Commie that was overthrown by the kids and grandkids of the people who had willingly followed him into the depths of Soviet communism. He probably regretted working to create a population boom in his early years in control, because those babies took him out when they became adults.

You bet they do, and then they start dancing on youtube. I've been dating an Iranian girl for a while now and I can tell you they're dancing, especially in short and tank-tops, is splendid sight to behold....lol. (Now watch the traffic from Bigger Pockets to Youtube skyrocket.)

Ahem, wrong. After communist block started crumbling in all surrounding countries, Ceausescu (old style communist) was removed from power (and murdered without a proper trial) by a neo-communist coup d'etat. The neo-communists stayed in power many yrs after that (depending on who you ask, even today).

You're trying to refute a point I didn't make. Nowhere in my post did I mention any party affiliation of the tens of thousands of young Romanian revolutionaries that stormed the government and loyalist buildings, scaring Ceausescu and his wife onto that helicopter.

The Wiki authors also seem to know far less than you.

Chris, sorry, I didn't mean to come across too harsh towards you. It's just how I saw those events having lived through them, no need to read about that in wikipedia. Unfortunately the thousands of young (and not only) revolutionaries (many of which have lost their lives with nobody held responsible to this day) were merely a decor to legitimize what was to become a neo-communist coup, and governance. Sad, but true.

Although, they say that if you remember the sixties, you weren't there...
Lots of those "Hippies" grew up to be very successful capitalists...

By the way, any good properties in Teheran this day. Maybe no it's the time to buy..

Another thing to remember is that the President of Iran, no matter who it is, has far less power than the Ayatollah. We can only hope that the Iranian people keep pulling away from theocracy.
Jimmy Buffett said on one of his live CDs that the way to solve the problem with Iraq (this was during the first Gulf War) was to drop millions of $5 bills on the cities of Iraq, and a day later drop LL Bean and Victoria's Secret catalogs on them. They would then embrace the West and our economy would get a nice boost too.

You and I are actually in agreement. There's a lot of money to be made in selling the liberal/hippie lifestyle and living as a conservative capitalist (notably in the clothing and glass blowing industries...alright, just kidding). Every ex-hippie I know seems to have done very well financially by applying this.

I joke with one of my buddies, who's a bona fide hippie that owns a coffee shop in town. I'm the conservative who drives a eco-friendly scooter to his shop while he drives his SUV there. I lowered my rents in response to the economy (I bought right so I can) while his markups skyrocketed.

I get along well with the liberals/hippies that own their own businesses or are investors. They're just as capitalistic as the rest of us; they're just selling a different product. As far as the employees and academia....forget it.

I am hoping to see some of those hippy style protests of the 60's today here should too many more socialistic programs become installed. There was a beginning on tax day and we may see more on JULY 4th if things dont settle down.

Now I am sure it will not be on the same level as now in Iran, but considering this is the US you could say that our "uprisings" here really do compare to the uprisings in Iran when you compare the two countries and what it takes to bring about change!

I was at the April 15th ones. World Net Daily (a little extreme on the right side, imho but generally good) put together a resource on where to find your July 4th tea party.

Already tea parties scheduled in nearly 1,200 cities! WOW!

EXACTLY! The Iranians have the guts to stand up and fight for their freedom. I'm not sure that Americans have the guts for that any longer. As long as Americans keep getting their handouts, they are content to just go with the flow. SAD!

"I am deeply troubled by the violence that I've been seeing on television," Obama said in Washington. "I can't state definitively one way or another what happened with respect to the election. But what I can say is that there appears to be a sense on the part of people who were so hopeful and so engaged and so committed to democracy who now feel betrayed."

This quote about the Iran situation by Obama, should be listened to by him when the grassroots revolts takes off again.

Sadly, Iran is also an example of what happens to a democracy when you fail in the task of "eternal vigilance". Iran was the first democracy in Asia. There were two problems: 1. Russia did not want a successful democracy in Asia for others to see and involved itself heavily into it's eventual dissolution and 2. the Majli (basically their parliament) gave more and more parliamentary power to the Shah to the point that the elected government basically became the Shah's rubber stamp committee. Now the Shah was certainly a more open minded leader than the Ayatollah, but you don't always need to be the dictator to facilitate a revolution. All you need to be is the person who puts the infrastructure (including the mindset) in place for a dictator to take over - and when you're deposed, the power vaccuum is there with open arms.

Now, with a stabilizing democracy in Asia within relative eyesight of Iran and pro-democracy American influence in the region that is much stronger than anti-democracy, overt Communist influence - Iran really does stand a much better chance of a Constitutional Revolution that lasts. Who knows, perhaps a stabilized democracy in Afghanistan and Iraq may start a trend of democracy throughout the middle east.

Real Estate Investor · ten mile, Tennessee

We can only hope that Iraq will be a stabilizing democracy in Asia at this point. With Obama promising to pull out ASAP the pro-democracy American influence may be comming to an end.

I do hope for the best there and in Iran. But let us not forget that our beginning was also very bloody until that stabilization began to take hold. Then we had our own internal fight (civil war).

Real Estate Investor · ten mile, Tennessee

Looks like more violence there today and more protests planned for tommorrow. Eight protesters now dead.

Things seem to still be in trumoil, but some pressure being applied seems to be working as the former presidents daughter was just released by the "ruling" party.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A daughter of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a rival of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has been released from detention, state television said on Monday.
