Hey BP. I'm searching for some advice from some well experienced/educated real estate salespersons/agents in Brooklyn Ny, Queens, NY, Bronx or Manhattan.

I'm 22 and saving up for an investment property out of state, BUT, I have been VERYYY unhappy for a few years now and would like to get out of EXPENSIVE Long Island. I don't hang out, almost 0 friends, no kids, always at work, not pursing any of my dreams and my life is just at a real stand still. I'm looking to move to Brooklyn for a life change. (I'm also saving up $5-6,000 before i start searching for a place for rent for $1,000+/month) I understand BK is expensive as well but I'M POSTING TO FIND OUT IF GETTING A REAL ESTATE LICENSE TO FIND WORK WITHIN THE 5 BOROUGHS IS WORTH IT? I know Long Island better than anywhere in the world but I was born in Manhattan and lived in Brooklyn as a child, I still go there to see family from time to time and feel as I'm someone who learns quickly. What is your experience with real estate companies in Brooklyn?

    Hi Amanda,

    Welcome to BP. As for your question if I understand it correctly is: should you get your Real Estate Salesperson License to work at a Real Estate agency in Brooklyn to make more money?

    It sounds like you already have a well paying job if you're able to save some money and handle you expenses. A real estate license is useful for investors who want access to MLS and feel that it can be an advantage. It's certainly not necessary but it can give you a bit of an edge.

    If you're thinking you can get licensed and start doing rentals or sales to supplement your income, I can tell you that it's WAY harder than you think. If you're thinking of being a part-time agent please consider the following. Real estate anywhere in NYC is very competitive. It's difficult for agents who are full-time to be successful and it would be even more difficult for someone who is just part-time. Scheduling viewings and showings to work around your spare time is going to be a challenge. Unless you have an endless stream of people you know personally that are going to be your loyal customers then you working with new customers is going to be your biggest challenge. Customers do not sit around and wait for agents. If you don't have the time to show them what they want to see when they want to see it, they will simply find someone else. And in this business it's all about keeping your customers happy and being available when they need you.

    I guess the short answer is. If you don't plan on being a full-time agent, it is not worth getting your RE License. I would never advise someone to be a part-time agent. To me Real Estate is more like a lifestyle than a job.

    Not sure what you're interested in doing with that real estate licence.

    Commercial Sales/Investment Sales - Could take months or a year or more to make your first deal

    Residential Sales - Only people I know who did well were those with connections already. Not saying it cant be done otherwise. Just my experience.

    Rentals - You can probably get away with part time in the summer. But I agree with Javier, it's tough doing it part time otherwise.

    Hey Amanda it is just like anything in life, if you want it bad enough you will get it! Don't get discouraged but do take into account what @Javier Diaz

    said it take a lot of work. The reality shows make it look simple, but if you want anything you can get it!
