Take course and license exam before/after moving to new state?

I want to get my real estate license but I'm not sure whether it makes more sense to do it before or after moving to a different state. I currently live in New York and am hoping to move elsewhere by the end of the year; I have not decided where yet. I would rather do it sooner than later but don't want to waste time and money if I'm going to have to repeat anything after moving. I know some states have reciprocity laws, is it generally pretty easy to get licensed in another state if I were licensed in NY?

Not all states have reciprocity agreements with all states, generally there are with surrounding states, simply due to state line issues that arise in some communities. Even so, such may have limitations as to your address and brokerage, for example an agent with an IL license may operate for a restricted period under a MO broker, after that they are to get a MO license of residency.

Wait until you get where you are going. I suggest you get settled in first too, get planted and know your area generally. Getting a license is one thing, finding a good broker who will take a green agent is another, now add on top of that someone who has no clue as to the area just makes things tougher.

Don't mean know the market, just know areas, know your way around, know the town a bit and the economy there.  Don't get in a hurry but you can study the basics anytime, stay away from guru stuff, it will mess up your learning process, conflicting matters may easily arise so stick to the formal stuff. The reciprocity laws are all over the place.  As an example, New York State has some of the more restrictive laws in the country, if you are trying to get a NYS license through reciprocity.  For example, NYS only grants reciprocity to brokers who have been brokers for at least 2 years.  They will not grant reciprocity to salespersons.  Your residence and business must be in your home state.

No, you'd have to check  the laws/reciprocity for the state you're moving to.  Even with reciprocity, you'd have to study the new sataes regs, and pass their test.
