How to start off Marketing yourself as a new real estate agent?

Im looking for methods of marketing that are practical and effective in the hot market of the Bay Area (Santa Cruz) where average homes are $ 900,000's or more! Would something physical like mailers or hangers be effective? Or ads online because of the high tech influence?
