An Anne Arundel County commute can change depending on where a home is and where work, school, appointments or other regular trips are located. Buyers looking in Annapolis, Severna Park, Arnold, Odenton, Millersville or Edgewater may want to compare the daily trip along with the home itself.
Residents may travel to Annapolis, Fort Meade and NSA, Baltimore, the Washington, D.C. area, the United States Naval Academy and regional medical centers. Depending on the home and where they need to go, buyers may also want to check the Odenton MARC station and local transit options when comparing areas.
Distance alone does not show the full picture. Traffic, road access, tolls, parking, work hours and time of day can all affect an Anne Arundel County commute. A home that looks close on a map may take longer to reach during busy travel times.
Before choosing a home, it can help to test the main routes at the times they would normally be used. Comparing a few different areas can also show how much the location changes the daily trip.

@Jeanie Halloran, this is such a practical point. I’ve seen buyers focus heavily on the house itself and only realize later how much the daily drive affects whether they are actually happy with the purchase. I always think it is worth testing the commute at the real time they would be traveling, not just looking at the mileage on a map.
The other piece I like to think about is the future. Even if the commute works for the buyer today, location can also matter later when they decide to sell or rent the property. Access to major roads, MARC, Fort Meade, Baltimore, and DC can make a real difference in how attractive that home is to the next person. It is always good to know more professionals who really understand the Anne Arundel County market.
Thanks, Diana! One thing I’d add is that for resale or rental, I’d look beyond proximity to any one job center and think about how many workable commute options the location gives someone. A home that has reasonable access to MARC as well as major routes gives the next buyer or renter more ways to make the location work for their own schedule and destination.
