What can I do about noisy neighbors?

Landlords are responsible for ensuring quiet enjoyment for tenants. If you're a tenant, notify your landlord. If you're the landlord, take action to resolve complaints quickly.

- Consider Soundproofing
If the issue can't be resolved directly, solutions like heavy curtains, rugs, or white noise machines can help reduce the impact.

@Enrique Jevons I would add one point, in some places you file a complaint but for real time noise that is an issue don't call your landlord call the local authority.  So if there is a party breaking noise ordinance call the police (generally use non-emergency number), our town will be on those infractions (Mainly it is a revenue source for them). If it is a dog barking call animal control. I can't say this is true for all areas but find out what is true for your area because an authority showing up will silence people quicker.

And if you are noise sensitive choose your apartment accordingly because there is going to be noise in multifamily dwellings. People above you are entitled to walk in their apartments.

I love this post @Enrique Jevons, and as a lawyer want to especially emphasize the documentation piece - this is the easiest way to ensure your complaints are taken seriously.  Especially in this day and age though, I'm not just recommending a journal entry, as those are pretty subjective - what sounds like an elephant to you may be white noise to another.  Take video and audio of the noise issues, ideally with time stamps of some sort, and you will set yourself up for real success if you do need to file the noise complaint and want it taken seriously.Note: This information is for educational and informational purposes only and does not constitute legal, tax, financial, or investment advice.
