New 2020 NY Laws for App, Background, and Credit Check Fees

Hi!

Can any investors in NY help me out with how they charge for credit and background checks. I want to use apartments.com but they charge $24-$29 for the credit/background checks but the new law says you can't charge more than $20. Does anyone have a way to get around this that maybe I'm missing? Or if you can't, what sites you're using to do the checks and how much they cost.

I really don't want to have to deal with actively collecting fees for the checks, I really want it to be automated through a site. And I don't want to have to pay for them out of my pocket if I don't have to!

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

@Katherine Tilley there is no work around. We charge a background fee of $20 to every person that applies. You can find companies that will do a back ground and credit check for $20 but it’s not going to be automated the way you want it.
We are a property management company and have a software system with all of this automated but, the software cost itself would not work for you.
Your options are eat the fee if you want to use Apartments. Com or find a company that will do it for $20 and have to collect the fee from all potential tenants. Some of these companies that charge $20 can take the fee automatically from the tenant but it won’t auto link with apartments.com
It’s a real pain for people that self manage. NY really screwed this one up.

Thank you for the info! I’ll have to do some more research into that but yeah NY is making things unnecessarily difficult.
