When Memphis property crime actually happens, hour by hour
Memphis crime data is generally about where, not when. We pull the data daily, and mapped a year of property crime to the hour. 35,737 incidents.
Quietest hour: 5am, 588 across the year. Busiest hour: 5pm, 2,041.
A 3.5x swing between the best and worst hour of the day. Memphis property crime surprisingly happens during the day, not at night.
Larceny bottoms at 5am (204), peaks at 4pm (997). Burglary bottoms at 2am (85), peaks at 3pm (216). Car theft peaks at 10pm (258), quietest at 1pm (63).
So theft and break-ins are daylight crimes. Car theft runs later but it is still an evening crime. By 3am it has already fallen off.
A vacant unit is most exposed 3pm to 7pm, not overnight.
Note that these are reported occurrence times... so a burglary found at 6pm that happened at noon gets logged 6pm, so some of this is when people DISCOVER things.
