Why Do We Ignore Hoarding When We First See It?

Frequently we may notice something out of the ordinary when it comes to hoarding. But we don’t say anything as we don’t want to offend the person or cause a rift in the relationship.

Perhaps this is a good tenant that pays their rent timely and they only have issue of too much clutter, so you don’t want to rock the boat.

Silence and saying nothing when you notice an issue does NOT solve the problem.

Hoarding issues can escalate quickly and letting it slide for one more month or until the next visit can allow the problem to fester and explode.

When you notice a friend, family member or tenant struggling with a hoarding issue, that is the time to begin working toward a solution.

-Don't wait until they are two days away from their annual inspection.

-Don't wait until they fail their inspection.

-Don't wait until "next year" as surely they will resolve it within that time period!

If you see someone struggling with clutter or not taking their trash out, know that it is likely a problem they cannot resolve on their own.

If the essence of their apartment is lingering in the hall and other tenants are complaining, take them seriously.

Most folks that hoard don't "see" the problem, otherwise known as "clutter blindness."

Or they may know there is a problem, but are too afraid to admit they need help for fear of losing their housing.

IF you see a problem, begin to take action. The problem won't solve itself.

Virtual consultations are available and we are happy to help you create a plan to assist the person resolve their hoarding situation.
