Sometimes You Need to Burn Your Plans

I had a vision for my company based on a vivid vision model for three years. I spent the last two months reading traction and other books to get me ready. I also set up my business organization chart and was ready to post, and hire, but I didn't. Right now you may be thinking you wasted 2 months, you know what part of me is thinking the same thing? I scrapped all of these plans last week.

I just told you a quick overview of my last two months. Now you may be wondering, well thanks Jason but why are you telling me this? I am telling you this because sometimes you need to walk away if there are changes in the market or your business. I mean even Phil Hellmouth walks away from pots sometimes (he may swear a lot) but he does leave his money there if he feels he can't win. It might be the hardest thing you do in business but sometimes your work is not relevant anymore. Let me tell you about what I did and why.

The setup I was working on was based on Flipping homes. I flip homes but my passion is short-term rentals. That was always pulling me to put more effort and time, but the flips make the money for the business to run right now so I was building a business around there to get me out of the day-to-day of that. Well, you all have been watching this market and seeing the variable change in interest rates and the falling house prices. What you may not have seen is materials to build cost has also been going sky high. Due to this, it's becoming harder and harder to find a flip that will produce the income needed for the time and stress it takes to finish one. BUT! The falling market has created an opportunity. The Short term rental market that used to have fiber million offers on each home now has none and is seeing price drops. I see an opportunity there to put my time and effort into my passion which could also fuel the business! So I put on my blinker and took a quick left when I planned to go right. Of course, I'll still need to get a few flips done this year to handle some business expenses but if I can set myself up so next year or the year after I don't then I can spend time in the area I want.

What I am trying to say to you is don't jump at every shiny object you see. If you do, you will get nothing accomplished. When you see a shift that will hurt your business be ready to pivot and go in the direction needed.

As Bruce Lee says “ Be Formless like water. You can put water into a cup and it becomes a cup. You can put water into a bottle and it becomes a bottle. You can put water into a teapot and it becomes a teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be like water, my friend.”

  1. Couldn't have said it any better Jason! Sometimes you just need to pivot from your current plans in order to become successful.
