State Of Mind Pt 1

I could write on the nuts and bolts of deals but there are others here that do it so much better than I can. What I am inspired to write about is the stuff success is made out of no matter what kind of crei niche we choose.

Most of this blog will be from the point of view of a (relative) newbie to help newbies. But we can all use a mindset polishing from time to time.

We've heard it before, maybe hundreds of times . . . attitude is everything. Mindset is the determining factor in winning or losing.

The muscle most important to develop to get to our goals/dreams is the one between our ears. I sat with a couple of girlfriends this morning; we're all 60ish. Rachael was saying that she was trying to celebrate her birthday but it was uneventful, uninspiring and disappointing.

She was asked what the purpose of her life is for the present and future. She said she didn't know; she felt isolated from others and you could hear in her voice that she was even feeling disconnected and isolated from her true self.

I shared with her that we all suffer from humanness from time to time and we all go through phases such as she is experiencing. I shared with her that every minite we

have the choice to re-invent, re-create ourselves. It is an opportunity and a choice.

I told her that, at this age, if I didn't consciously choose to re-invent myself each day I would pick out the flowers and music and urn and say adios amigos. If I look at life with my already always way of thinking about how it's shown up I could become a cynic and pessimist.

She commented, "Wow, you sound really clear". I laughed out loud and told her that it'd just come out of a long dark night of the soul.

In the dark seasons we are blessed with lots of time to consider. Consider what our life has been lived for and what we want it to be. A wise proverb says, "without a dream, the people perish". I really get that now.

In the past two years I went through a painful divorce, a major illness with resultant unemployment and 3 moves (one was out of state). Whew! I wondered what the heck had happened to my usually awesome life.

It was all I could do to tread the sad waters of my soul and breath through the insecurity and pain. I really felt like a p.o.c. (piece of c#%*). It caused me to

go deeper and deeper into what I wanted.

A mentor of mine once told me to walk around saying, "I know what I want" over and over. . . when I was driving, doing the dishes, the laundry  etc. She said our

heart knows what it reeeeeallly wants and by affirming it I would clear away some of the confusion.

So I did it. The fog started clearing. And I came back to what I love to do; crei. I have dabbled in it on an off for 18 yrs but never completely committed to it. Many times I would think, "I wish . . ." (I had stuck with crei). So I chose to not listen to the ugly critic inside my head (You're such a loser, if you woulda . .  . you really shoulda . . .)

I chose instead to humble myself and follow every single wonderful generous person in crei that I could  find. I began a routine every morning and evening to listen to pod casts, videos and read the wonderful posts here on Bigger Pockets  and the blogs of people I have grown to appreciate here.

It was almost magical. Just like when we start working out---maybe just walking a

mile per day, I started to feel my crei muscles strengthening and my excitement and joie de vivre returning.

Maybe sweet dreams are more appreciated after a long nightmare. I do know now, for sure, that mindset is everything. I work to build it stronger every day.

I've had some deals that worked and several "almosts". I am on my way to the success I hold in my mind and heart. But that isn't all; I am also enjoying the journey . . a lot.

Thanks for reading! Please leave a comment about how you tweek that muscle between your ears or how you built your mindset to grow out of a dark time.

  2. Melodee - Sorry to get to this post so late, but better late than never. It is great to hear about your epiphany and the decision to focus on the "muscle between your ears." I love reading about people's tipping points and hope your article inspires at least one other investor to take things as seriously as you did. We love having you hear and I'm proud to know that BiggerPockets has become an important part of your routine. Josh
