The Power of Just 3 Things
I heard a very influential motivational speaker say that only those with focus will succeed. That means that people (like me) who are all over the place and lack focus will chase their tales as long as they continue on that path.
This statement freaked me out, and inspired me. It was an excellent reminder that there is huge power in breaking down the big picture and consistently taking action until results are achieved.
There is hope for us over-achieving, scattered, "we can do anything so let's do everything" types.
One strategy that has helped me is what I call, "the power of just 3 things." I employ this strategy for my daily living, as well as for complex projects
What is "The Power of Just 3 Things"?
I am not sure if I can clearly define it, and I can't tell you why it works, but let me tell you how I use it.
Each week I assign myself 3 tasks per day that moves me closer to my most important goals, all of which point towards the overall vision for my life. If all I do each day are those 3 things, the day is a success. It is a good day. Who can't do just 3 things? Even the busiest people I know can do 3 things. The power of doing 3 things every day to achieve our biggest dreams creates momentum AND massive results. It's like magic.
What does this have to do with real estate investing? It has EVERYTHING to do with finding, buying, and making money in real estate.
For newbies: The Power of Just 3 Things will get you your first deal, your second deal, and keep your machine running for future deals for as long as you want to stay in the game. Instead of continuing on the hamster wheel, chasing after who knows what, each week you are specifying 3 very specific, SIMPLE things to get you to your goal of buying a property.
For pros: The Power of Just 3 Things steadies the ship. One thing that can kill any business is growth, and the Power of Just 3 things will balance things out. As you consider your goals for various projects, select just 3 things for one or more of your project, but follow the tips given below. This is especially helpful for newly successful investors who are easily distracted and often lose focus in one area to give all attention to another.
DAILY TIPS
1. Keep the 3 things very simple. You will do 3 new things every day, so don't make them too difficult to do each in 15 minutes or less. This will keep you successful and on track.
2. Mark the 3 things off every day. I use a "to do" list online that allows me to "check" it off. It is such a great feeling.
3. Once you mark the 3 things off, close your eyes for a second and envision your goal. Reflect on the fact that you just did tasks that got you closer to what you want! It feels good, so you'll want to do it again tomorrow.
After about a week, if you think about it, please respond to this post. Tell me how doing these things affected you. Then, revisit in a month - I can't wait to hear how much progress you made!

Great comments! I'll take a look at the book. The "3 things" method has worked for me, but I love new ideas. I'm kind of weird, though - I like marking off the items, so 3 could be better than one, depending on perspective. Happy Labor Day!

Well I don't feel so bad now that Ned Carey wasted two days. I just wasted today - but today isn't over. I'm going to get a preliminary construction schedule whipped out right now. Signing off BP'er.

Tiffany Youngren Check out the book "The One Thing" by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. It reduces your idea of three things down to one. It is well written and easy to read. It is full of actionable ideas. I don't have to wait a week to report as I have already been doing this. I can say I am most productive when I follow "the one thing". The last two days I didn't take my time to plan in the morning and felt they were both relatively unproductive days. Whether you chose one thing, three things as you suggest, or 5 thing as Ivy Lee told Charles Schwab to do, focusing on your key priorities every day is a great habit.

Additionally you should keep an journal on how things are going and whether you are able to keep up on daily basis
