Guru vs Mentor
Hello everybody. I know it's been a while since I have posted a blog, but that's the nature of the business when you are closing deals. I want to quickly touch on something that I have been hearing in the streets over the past couple of weeks. A lot of people want help in becoming a wholesale investor but afraid. I have heard a number of fears from not knowing what to do to being afraid of losing money. When I ask if they have a mentor, the response is always about some program that they bought or boot camp they went to. Now I see why they are afraid.
To set the record straight, I have no problem with people that are selling real estate information and getting paid for it. I just feel bad for the person buying it because it's yet another book to put on the book shelf or another PDF to download that's taking up space on your computer. How can you tell the difference between a guru and a mentor? Both are very similar in how they act. The guru puts out claims on how he or she is doing deals and making massive amounts of money and wants to teach you how to do the same. The mentor is similar in claims but may not talk about the money that they make. How can you tell them apart?
The guru is marketing and looking for those that want to learn but will not take you by the hand to teach you. They might only be available by email or short 30 minute phone calls. The guru takes on so many people that it makes it impossible for him/her to be able to personally teach each of them. So he/she puts everything on tape or PDF and has you read and listen. Because the guru is taking the time to make all this material, he/she is going to charge for that time it took to make it rather than the time he/she takes to personally train you in the field.
The mentor is completely different. 9 times out of 10 you found him/her through making connections and putting it out there that you need help in real estate. He/she will gauge your strengths and weakness, take you by the hand and give you step by step instructions on how to be successful in the business. The great thing about the mentor is that they aren't actively looking to help people so they are not stretched too thin when bringing you on. One of the greatest things is that you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to receive information from this person.
So which would you rather have, a mentor or a guru?
Look forward to your comments!
