Slide-In Range Problem in Condo Remodel

Slide-In Range Problem in Condo Remodel

Hi everyone,

I’m fixing up a condo.

We wanted to install a 30-inch slide-in electric range. But there is a metal electrical box sticking up from the concrete floor right in the middle of the range space. Because of that, the range can’t slide all the way back.

Because of where it's located, there is no wall behind the range. The wire comes up through the concrete slab.

GC suggested that it's unable to relocate or recess the box into the concrete.

If this was your flip, what would you do?

Has anyone had this problem before? What was the easiest and lowest-cost fix?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Your contractor is just lazy. Using a hammerdrill, chip enough concrete away from the conduit to provide the needed clearance to work. After removing the junction box, CAREFULLY remove just enough of the vertical conduit (without damaging the wiring) to enable lowering the 4X4 junction box. You cannot bury the box, it must remain visible and accessible, unless you can also remove the feed wire back to the panel to eliminate the connection point within the box, using a new, longer, feed wire to reach a new, better positioned box. This is a critical, 220v circuit, and must be properly done to prevent death or fire in the future. A licensed Electrician should be utilized for the modification.

Also, you could change to a drop in range, assuming there are cabinets on both sides. Last option would be to modify the bottom drawer of the range, and seal the drawer face so it cannot be removed. That's pretty ghetto, but would work.
