@Jeff Byrne student loan debt (depending on terms) can definitely hamstring you on investing.

The big box stores squeeze and hamstring their contractors so bad they are forced to cut corners and many quit half way through the first job when they realize they’re losing money, or just put in effort commensurate to what they’re getting paid which means a terrible finished product.

Moving too quickly can hamstring you for a long long time.

I personally feel it hamstrings you, but others really enjoy the access to the MLS.

A better comparison is a major hamstring pull vs. blowing out your achilles.

(Unless you’re going to use that space yourself.) 1- an ordinance just passed midterm elections (placed by our board of stupidvisors of course;) that significantly fines LL’s with vacant commercial space. 2- renting retail commercial was hard enough in SF, primarily because of use restrictions/red tape and exorbitant  build out costs, which hamstrings small businesses.

This will hamstring your project if things go sideways.

I try avoid such properties that would hamstring me like that.

I do not like those types of investments where outside forces hamstring what I can charge for supply and demand and they control my investment without owning it or paying to maintain it like I do.
