Yes, @Matt Bailey, this is all public information. Any lien (mortgage) on a property must be "registered" with the town. In my area, this is all included in the MLS. So, my realtor can tell me. Once a mortgage is paid off, that is also "registered." Depending on how well your municipally has moved it's information on-line, you may be able to find it there. Otherwise, a trip to town hall is in order.
You could also pay a title company, but that's going to get pretty expensive, if you're researching a lot of properties.
