Is $1400.00 a month enough money to........?

Live on? If I only bring home $700 every two weeks to pay monthly debts that are more than what I earn monthly, can I afford to get my own place to stay? I have loads of debt and I know my current debts and the debts I will have to pay to live on my own will seem like more than I can handle. Do they have housing programs available for low income single people with no kids? I am in a tough situation at home where my folks are in a rough spot financially and I am always put in a tough situation where I have to keep sacrificing my down payment for my own home to help them get over. This is constantly happening to me. I want to move out and get my own place, so it's not like I am just laid back comfortable just living under my parents roof with no plans of moving out. All I need is a bigger down payment on a home and even bigger steady paychecks coming and I am I good to go. So far my down payment has been used as a safety net to help the family out. The more I get put in a situation like this the more that decreases my chances at ever leaving. What am I missing? My parents seem to think it is possible for someone like me to survive on my own with the money I bring home every month and still pay all of the costs of living on my own including my current debts, which has to be paid every month. If there was an option to make this happen for me I would do it starting today if I could. That's how bad I want to get out.

You can get by without cable, use the internet for your tv watching entertainment.

Use the internet to google North Dakota Oil Fields or check into jobs in Texas. You recently posted that you wish you knew the name of an online fax service. I replied that you could find lots of free ones by googling them. You have internet - the whole world is available to you via internet. In this age, there is no reason to say you don't know something, if you have a device and internet connection: Look it up yourself.

You do have it tough, I agree, and your student loans will follow you forever. Part of the problem, I suspect, is your location. But determination to break out of the cycle is another part of it. If you have an accounting degree, you can research accounting jobs in other parts of the country like Austin Texas or North Dakota. So just because you don't know anything about North Dakota, doesn't mean you don't have the means to get information about it. Look it up!

Pay varies dramatically by area. In Northern Massachusetts, I know real estate investors who are paying $40 per hour for bookkeepers (not accountants, bookkeepers). Two hours away on Cape Cod, CPA's are dying on the vine and lucky to get $25 when they start out. Sounds great when you are only making $15 or less, but remember the cost of living is very high. But there are ways: rooming houses to start with, or renting a room in a house. Again, you can search on the internet to start with. Look it up!

    Antonio Bodley,
To continue from my previous post:
Do you own or rent the modem to go online?
If you're renting the modem, you can purchase it at Walmart, Staples, Bestbuy, etc., and save the monthly rental fee.

How many Company's offer Cable and Internet Service in your area?
If you have more than one, you should find out which one has the best price, for your needs.
In my area, I have the choice of either the Cable Company or the Phone company, and they both provide Cable, Internet and Phone Service.
Neither one makes me purchase the complete package.
I can purchase Cable from one, and the Internet from the other.
I don't use either one for a Home Phone, as I have a VOIP service.

From the above article "North Dakota struggles to cope with its oil-boom prosperity":

OP, Rob K. might have been right on the money about this. Promise me you'll at least look into it.

The reason I brought up North Dakota is because I had read a while back about the jobs there. The schools didn't have any janitors because they were all out making $130K in the oil fields. I read about one guy who rolled into town on an empty tank of gas and had a job that afternoon. Even strippers are making $2,000 per day.

If I were young and single with no job prospects, I would be there by sundown tomorrow.

I was looking at a long list job openings in the North Dakota oil field and Texas. They like many other employers are very strict with their job qualifications. I don't qualify for none of these jobs according to what these employers are looking for. Location is not only my biggest problem. Most of that comes from my lack of work experience. Higher education even the highest education just doesn't cut it anymore these days. Employers strongly demand work experience and a lot of it in a short period of time. I know. That is exactly why I lost out on countless jobs. The degree was good enough to get my foot in the door for an interview. The work experience is what would have gotten me all the way inside for good. I can apply to jobs all day every day in state and out of state. The key is actually getting the job not just wasting my time at interviews with no chance at ever getting hired.

Are these real legit work from home jobs? I'm talking jobs like real jobs where I get to contact real people. I seen many work from home jobs that didn't turn out to be what I considered real jobs.

I agree with all the advice you have been given. Stop seeing yourself as a victim and doors will open for you.

I read through quite a few of the posts on this thread, but not all of them. I didn't see anyone advising you to look into getting a roommate. Plenty of people advertise looking for roommates. Start responding to some of THOSE ads rather than to these posts. Find a roomie and start splitting expenses. Man up and make the choice to do what you have to do to change your situation for the better!

Yes they are legitimate. Thats why I posted it. Companies have decided to cut their overhead by not providing a brick/mortar building and having their workers provide equipment like computers.

I saw positions from companies looking for people to answer emails or field phonecalls. I dont know if it still applies but Google had a position that paid $15/hr. But dont stop at wahm.com. There are several freelance sites where you can bid for jobs and do projects virtually from home.

I rent the modem. I use to have a modem I bought long ago, but it didn't work like the one the cable company provided. I only know of one company that offers this. I didn't have to purchase a bundle deal, but it was cheaper than what I had before with the previous phone company.

No. Actually if your work experience was good enough to get you to the interview then it was good enough to get you hired. Something else is going on. You have to figure out what you're doing during the interview thats making the employers pass on you.

I believe I know which site you talking about. Wahm is similar to another site I found some time ago. Are these jobs good enough to allow me to quit my current 9 to 5 job? Did you find that $15/hr job at a work from home site or the Google employment page?

I wouldn't quit my job but it will allow you to save some money that mom and dad dont know about. Did you look up Dave Ramseys debt snowball?

Well I want something that will allow me to quit my current job. That is the main reason why I am looking at other options. Yes I saw his Snowball plan.

I know small business owners who use a bookkeeper to take care of finances. My grandpa owned a small store and used a bookkeeper to handle his finances. Have you thought about using your accounting skills to do this on the side? They could email you there incoime and expenses and you could track it for them and charge $20-30 per hour. It would be a nice sideline and if it grew enough, you might be able to quit your day job that pays you weekly (weakly).

It wouldn't cost you much to get some business cards made and start talking to people. You could run a CL ad for free and maybe join one of those groups where you have breakfast once per month with other business owners.

Stop looking at reasons why something wont work and focus on the reasons why it will. There is nothing wrong with having multiple streams of income.

This is the sort of thing that drives me crazy with my daughter. She, too, got her degree and is still waiting tables because every job she applies for, she either doesn't have enough experience or not enough education (Bachelor degree does not mean what it used to, apparently). And yet, she doesn't want to live with a roommate. Needs her personal space. Forced to live with a roommate, it's constant bickering, she drank my soda, she ate my food, etc.

Priorities will define your life, so please choose them wisely. If your priority is personal space versus sacrificing some personal space now to own a home later, then realize you are limiting your own future success and be okay with your decision. Or, as it took me a while to convince my daughter, if your priority is really owning a home, deal with the roommate, learn to hide your drinks in your room, stop buying so much refrigerator food and keep staples in your room, get a lock for your own bedroom door, and each month you deposit a few hundred dollars by splitting expenses with a roommate (cable is $60 each, not $120; power is $40/month, not $80, etc.), congratulate yourself on one month closer to your goal. Sometimes the biggest obstacle in getting ahead in life is your own attitude.

Man, you just seem to jump at every opportunity to find what or how something will not work. For your job skills and search I would recommend the you read "40 days to the work you love" which I believe is by Dan Miller. As for your more income needs. Get rid of Cable and internet immediately. You say you are very dedicated and want to get out on your own and make yourself a better life, well than prove it. You don't have time for TV if you are really dedicated to turning your life around. Phone is important so I would keep that, internet is also important but you can swing by the library to use the internet for free or some other place with free access. With an accounting degree, I would walk to every single business in your area, not call or email but go meet in person, this shows initiative, and see what type of freelance work or bookkeeping you can do. This will blow away you current monthly income in short order if you are dedicated and can take hearing no a lot before y ok u get yeses. Also start going door to door and asking folks if they need someone to cut their grass for the year or paint a shed or seal a blacktop driveway. The work is out there, you just need to find it. I feel there is no excuse that anybody who really wants to can't make $2,000 a month just by going out and asking for the work.

I see many job postings for bookkeepers that are remote. Seems like with your accounting training you should be able to find something--but honestly, it sounds like you do need a more positive attitude because there is a lot of "well that won't work because..."  One of my favorite quotes (by Henry Ford) is, "Whether you think you can or can't...you're right."

Use your Internet access to look into one of the virtual/remote gigs on the SAHM sites, like the others have mentioned. Once you find one--no, don't quit your 9-5, you do the virtual work during your extra time. It's all about the multiple income streams, even after you become successful at REI.

So, don't give up--but you have to start shifting your outlook from "I can't" to "I can"!
