More horrible news from this sad city. Btw, Seattle City council approved an ordinance making criminal history "off limits" on rental applications. Maybe not a good idea.

I did not think Seattle even allowed evictions anymore. Probably won't now. Hope the cop pulls through. How in hell can a LL protect his tenants if background checks are not allowed?
Yes I live 5 mins away from that scene. It's getting chaotic here now where tenants are being protected and empowered by the city council/government as they feel they are entitled to do whatever they desire. @Carlos Valencia@Albert Bui

This is exaclty why mailing it several different ways such as first class and certified with return receipt should be permitted and count as it being "delivered". Under no circimstamces should we need to physically go to these properties more times than absolutely necessary. Soon we will need SWAT with us just to carry out an eviction...
I think NYC also made is illegal to screen based on criminal history. Sigh. What a cluster F.
When, oh when, will property owners get their rights back in these woke liberal areas?!
It's lunacy. The only item on a criminal report that you can automatically decline is "manufacturing and distribution of a controlled substance". But sex offenders need to be looked at individually and what class they are makes a difference. If 18 year old Tommy slept with his 17 year old girlfriend and the parents get mad and call the cops.... you can't deny based solely on that alone. Whether or not violence was involved makes a difference in the higher classes as well.
@Henry T. I do agree criminal records help in screening but I think the sheriff can run the criminal record even if you can't screen on it. Not sure if it would matter in this case.
Way to jump to conclusion..... you all immediately concluded that this person had a prior criminal records that would have prevented them from renting this unit...... and the local government is responsible for all of this happening....
So law enforcement never gets shot at while serving a warrant/evictions in "red states"?....
Conformation bias at its finest...
We can argue the merits/pitfalls of the ordinances as much as you want... there is a lot of it I disagree with........ but the "you got what you asked for" attitude is just plain ignorant

YOU are jumping to conclusions. Many of us bemoan the fact that idiots in city councils think it is acceptable to not allow landlords to screen based on criminal history. I don't think anyone here said/assumed it would have made a difference in this case.
The OP:
"More horrible news from this sad city. Btw, Seattle City council approved an ordinance making criminal history "off limits" on rental applications. Maybe not a good idea."
Those two sentences are separate thoughts. Given the behavior of people in crisis, it is reasonable to expect that landlords DO NOT want criminals, especially violent criminals, to rent their units. Not only for their own safety, but for the safety of other tenants in the same building.
Your post is the typical hand wringing, victim mentality to accuse people of ignorance and confirmation bias, etc.
Basically, to repeat:
A person shot at public servants doing their job. The person died during the act of aggression.
on a separate note, the jurisdiction that it happened in made it illegal to do background checks on people applying to be tenants.
The irony and stupidity of the second statement is heightened by an example of an occurrence that one might want to avoid as a landlord.
No one stated that the lack of screening was causal.
I do not appreciate governments limiting my ability to make contracts with whom I want, nor do i appreciate interference in private contracts. Too many governments are causing more "housing issues" with supposed "tenant protections" and "rent protections". The proof of the unintended negative effects on the housing market is left as an exercise for the reader.

Dear Ned:
Law abiding citizens don't usually shoot police officers. Oops, there I go jumping to conclusions again.
Incidentally, why would any government think they should be able to tell me that I have to rent my property to a criminal? This is precisely what they're doing when they don't permit you to check.
City is transforming in to a cesspool. Why anyone would invest in rental property there, is way beyond my comprehension.

"I didn’t know they had a gun and their only crime was just being poor, not being able to pay $13,000 worth of back rent," the friend told KOMO News. "They exhausted all the funds that were allocated during the pandemic."

"you all", "All government", "enforcement never gets shot", now there's some conclusions. I think it would be "ignorant"(not calling names) to think that making criminal checks "off limits' on an application does not add risk. But let me add this, it's just the begining of "you got what you asked for", things are gonna get a heck of a lot worse. I guarantee it.

how about "you get what you vote for" instead?
I got the good citizens of west coast states applying for my rentals in Texas. Meanwhile the landfill of Seattle and California get worse with every election. Your loss, my gain.

1. folks here in BP like to say we should follow the law rigorously 2. the lawmakers and the politician make the law 3. recently, laws are created to protect criminals .... lol that's why I no longer want to add rental property.
The west coast, east coast, and north coast are all the same, the gov. is moving to anti-landlord.
from squatter to eviction law, they're all anti LL.

It is spreading in CA as well. They started the same several months ago in at least one city, may be more. In fact, I received my 3rd reminder letter today that Criminal History can no longer be used for screening, or for evictions. They went as far as to say if I did so several months ago, I must contact the tenant and allow them back in. It sounds ridiculous, but it is true. As a consolation, the city will no longer do annual inspections.
I don't think anyone was worried about the superficial inspection and minuscule annual fee. I would rather have the ability to evict and eliminate criminal activity from my apartments. Such is politics. Perhaps it is the natural evolution of our society. As property owners, we just need to be more crafty and keep a close eye on where things are headed. If proven successful, it will spread all over. If not, then it will disappear as the politicians change over time. It is similar to how the population migrates and spreads their ideals, changing political landscapes across America. Many of us have seen the changes in the political landscape over the decades.
There is no point in getting upset. Just do what needs to be done to keep you happy and on track toward your personal goals and ambitions.
For prospective investors who want to know, this is the city of Hesperia, CA. It is in the high desert of San Bernardino County. It is effective December 27, 2022.
As I reread the letter for the 10th time, it is clear that the wording insinuates/suggests that people with criminal backgrounds are becoming part of a special protected class. Any adverse actions that are unfavorable to the protected classes are considered discrimination.
I still cannot believe it. But it just happened. I will refrain from any more purchases there or in the neighboring area for now. As we all know, these things affect the community and its surroundings.

Members are not saying this occurred because criminal background checks are not permitted for rental screening. We are saying more simply that it's a bad policy...and there are consequences of a lawless society. This person shot a police officer...that was simply doing their job. Do you think that disallowing criminal background checks is good for society and real estate investing?
Part of the reason I left Cali. Criminals get the right of way, while the ones trying to do things right are punished.
violence and criminal increases have been increased nationwide, maybe california/washington/oregon is the worst as the city is now heaven for drug abuse and criminal activity.
just yesterday I saw a pair stealing a bunch of lotion from ulta store and run away LOL even the criminals are stealing skincare product now lol
Say I need to rent place to criminal becoz it's the law ? Hell nooooooo lol
