INSIDIOUS MOVEMENT TO #CANCEL RENTS! (NOT SUSPEND... CANCEL!)

Below is the letter we sent to NY state Governor Cuomo. plus MY State Senator, plus the Senator who drafted this bill, and all NYC Housing Depts and officials.  Thoughts?  Will you all Join Me?  If you agree, please also reach out to your OWN Representatives, to send a similar letter: (Don't know who represents you?  Google: "Who Represents Me .......... My Wife and I are, literally, small-business Mom & Pop Property Managers. We rent out just 6 [INSERT YOUR NUMBER HERE] units, and just barely manage to pay the bills each month. We love our Tenants, and treat them with great respect.

But we have no illusions - The SECOND they feel empowered to not pay rent... whether they've been negatively impacted by Coronovirus or not, they will simply stop paying rent. This will bankrupt us!

Where is the

  • #CancelMedicalInsurancePremiums movement? (These are the real culprits, after all)
  • #CancelDrugPrescriptionCosts 
  • movement? (Everyone needs to eat, right? Why not free food for all?)
  • #CancelWater-Sewer ? (These bills are massive!)
    ? (Are YOU, as Gov't, willing to give up YOUR income? If not, isn't this hypocritical?)
  • #CancelIncomeTaxes ? (Same as above)
  • #CancelMortgages? (Why let banks get a free-pass or another free bailout ?) 
  • ? (Why let Fossil-Fuel energy companies skate? Oil ? Gas? Electricity? These bills are massive)
  • #CancelPropertyInsurance (Why let Property Insurers get a free pass, too?)


It's not fair that LANDLORDS - and ONLY Landlords - are made the culprits, and must shoulder ALL of Society's burdens... Each month, we have tremendous Contractual Obligations and payments to make - Grocery-Bills, Utilities, Mortgages, Plumbers, Electricians, Medical Insurance Premiums, Property-Insurance, Sewer-Water, Oil, Gas, Electricity, Property Taxes, Cable & Internet, Cell-Phone, Income-Taxes...

Are we now doing away with our entire system of Contract & Tort Law?   Until you ALSO cancel ALL of the above also, please stop singling our small businesses out only.

    WOW... I would have a hard time seeing that bill pass.. I get the postpone and no evictions for the greater good but NOT cancel.

    That is probably unlikely to pass, if for no other reason than the banks will fight it as the landlord impacted by this also gets to forego paying mortgage payments for that same period.  I'm just glad I live where I do.

    I should point out that the main sponsor of the bill - NY Sen Gianaris - Is the same person who scuttled Amazon's plans to bring its East Coast HeadQuarters to NYC, and 50,000 + jobs with it.  This demon, along with AOC,  is known as the "Jobs Slayer"

    I'm cool with this as long as the banks, insurance companies and tax jurisdictions cancel all payments and interest.

    Fat Chance - That's exactly the point - They will NOT do that  - It will fall only on Landlords & PMs.  PS - It's not just Banks & Taxes & Insurance... Dont forget ALL the rest too!

    This is exactly why nobody should be waiving any rent. You think these other jurisdictions and large corporations are going to waive anything??? I understand if somebody gets behind but you need put them on a payment plan and hold them accountable for the full amount they signed a lease for.

    I read the link that you posted. Right at the top of the wording it says "Suspend", not "Cancel". Where does it say that rent is permanently cancelled for 90 days? I'm not saying it's a good idea but it sounds like a lot of hysteria to me.

    @Brooklyn R Los Angeles is getting really close to free rent, the Mayor just signed the new law for tenants to have 12 months to catch-up or settle any back rent before a landlord can take any action.

    @Ray Johnson I highly doubt it will get to FREE RENT. Trump himself wasn’t able to make the banks budge over 3months. BOA only gave in for 30days. At the end of the day the Government wants their money just as bad as we do. Let’s just hope for the best. I can’t see this lasting more than 30-40days max.

    @JD Martin  I just got off the phone with my State Senator's office -  They will be adding language to make any "missed payments" permanently forgiven, by force.

    I am here in NJ (Gov Murphy) and this is the type of stuff that disgusts me. We are all going through hell here in North Jersey / NYC metro, so why are these politicians pushing their horrible agenda on the back of small landlords. It is all apart of the big plan.

    I am, literally, a small-business Mom & Pop real estate investor and property manager. I rent out just [X] units in [Your County] County and just barely manage to pay the bills each month. I love my tenants and aim to always take great care of them.

    Halting rent payment for 90 days is an inequitable solution. Even if mortgage payments were suspended, they will eventually be due.  Furthermore, this proposal disproportionately puts the burden on property owners for other expenses that are still due (state property taxes, maintenance, utilities, etc)

    I don't pretend to be a constitutional scholar, but the 5th amendment appears to bar this exact proposal: "nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

    I cannot think of another instance where products or services are TAKEN from private citizens and handed out.

    If the NY State government is keen on providing rent support for 90 days, then they should be issuing government backed vouchers, not forcing the burden on small business owners. Small business is the lifeblood of NY and the US; don't squash us.

    I work graveyard and have CNN going through the night because listening to sports replays got old fast.  Two nights ago one of the talking heads said what she wants is for the government to realize it needs to start buying apartment complexes large scale so people don't have the burden of rent anymore.   imagine what THAT would do to the real estate market.

    @Bob B. I agree.  It is scary some of the things the opinionists (not journalists) say on there.  Especially to someone like me that believes in small federal government and more power to the states/counties.

    It doesn't matter whether the bill gets traction, which it may not... the word is out that this is going to be a freebie- a mulligan for tenants.

    Tenants are going to be encouraged and emboldened.

    This is the truest test of your vetting process! Fingers crossed.

    All three of these are already widely held views that (prior to COVID-19, least) were a lot more top-of-mind than cancelling rent.

    I think everyone should receive a living wage and not have to work for it. Then tear down all the buildings in the country and rebuild with renewable resources. And there would be a giant rainbow in the sky all day, too. 

    I'm really curious as to which moron or clown brigade got this latest, greatest bright idea. Socialism is not healthy.
