Hello everyone,
I’m a new investor and my house is a single family house that is split into two, 3 bedroom on one side and studio with a bar area and own bathroom on the other. I’m going to start house hacking by renting out the studio side in June and want to make it have it’s own address. For example the numbers on my house are 2309 and I want the studio to be 2309 1/2. I can’t find anything on google, is there any way I can fractionalize my address?
Contact the city and let them know about your desire to have a new address for safety and emergency response. They will usually determine the new address and then start the process to inform all the other departments and push it to the post office. The post office can’t create new addresses in their system and only has them fed via the town records. Usually, you’ll need to put new lettering on the houses / units so emergency vehicles can find you. When I did it recently, it was a fairly quick and straightforward process. The longest part was getting it onto the mail route.
Re-reading your original post and it sounds like it might not be a legal unit. You might want to be careful about alerting the town about activity that could be considered a use violation.
