Real estate agent/ Uber driver? For supplemental income.

I just finished my pre licensing course to become a real estate sales agent. I am now aware of the need to budget money in between sales, to attempt to protect you from being broke. I currently work 2 jobs. Once I pass my state exam, have a broker, etc., I want to continue to work one job to make sure I have back up income in between sales. But I don't want to be held back from succeeding by being unavailable %50 of the time. I am also a registered Uber driver. What are your thoughts on being a Real Estate agent and an Uber driver? I think it would be an awesome option of making supplemental income and having a "job" that would allow me to take a call and be available at a moment's notice. I would in no way pitch to every rider that gets in my car. But when natural conversation comes into play, as it does the majority of the time, I think it would be a great way to protect myself financially and further my success as an agent.

    @Matt R.  @Jay Hinrichs Lyft/Uber tip: Best time to drive in an MSA (atleast in LA) are Sunday mornings to afternoon. I pick locations between nightlife and upscale neighborhoods (Belair, West Hollywood). You catch a lot of traffic from people who went out the night before and are trying to make it to brunch or left the car somewhere. You skip the drunkness and benefit from light traffic so you are able to complete a lot of trips in a very short amount of time.

     Thanks for the insider tip. That makes total sense for yours and mine same location. Jay, he is just doing for kicks and giggles. I think he loves his new car and would drive around for free mostly.

    @Chloe Landon To be frank, I ride Lyft/Uber all the time and if the driver told me they're also a real estate agent in casual conversation, I'd question their success. I barely have any time for myself, let alone a side gig driving people around. But if do you need the additional income, I think it'd be a great fit as it's so flexible. I would not depend on it to give me clients though.

    Great idea...

    I would only drive to earn money to pursue specific RE goals... For example: Only drive to earn enough for your next marketing campaign.

    I wouldn't make a regular habit of driving.

    I also would never drive for the party/bar scene. If you want to make the most out of the relationships, make relationships with professional people who are in a position to buy/sell or associate with people who are. I'm thinking the work rush hour downtown crowd, maybe lunch crowd.

    Great plan Chloe. I have advised many new agents who work for me to do exactly this plan. For a new agent a 2nd source of income that is flexible and puts you in the same room (or car) as people whom you otherwise would not have met is a perfect recipe for lead generation.

    Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders, good luck to you i'm sure you will do great.

    I also agree with some of the comments about avoiding the bar crowd, or at least the bar crowd on their way home from the bar as opposed to their way to the bar. You should focus on times when your passengers will be sober. Sun goes down you won't be having as many strategic conversations with your passengers.

    @Ivy Wang  I have had that thought as well.. talking to Uber and lyft drivers that tell me about their other gigs.

    however as a Real estate agent ... I can see how you could get referrals if your nice and they like you and don't already have an agent.

    and for sure I could see in certain cities picking someone up who has a home they just want to dump.. Not necessarily west coast this would work but I can see that in the bigger cities out east that have more homes than butts to put in them..

     I completely agree Ivy. Needed for the time being, but will be used to further my RE goals and will tread carefully when I am asked about my other job. I was concerned about what kind of light it would paint me in. Thank you. :)

    @Chloe Landon I think its a great idea. I don't think being an uber driver reflects poorly on you. It's a good way to meet potential clients. Amazon delivery is also a good way to generate extra income while you get some deals in escrow.

    @Matt R. @David Faulkner  I am now an official lyft driver.. not sure I can figure out how to use the app though.. but will try it one Sat morning for fun.. it was a funny process

    you show up and they have to inspect the car.. guy says turn on the engine.. ( I said I don't have an engine  he looks at me  funny)  I said DUDE this is an electric car it just goes.. kind of stunned

    then he had to make sure the seat belts worked.. and boom the Tesla was approved.

    then of course you have to upload your stuff on your EYE phone with pictures and that was cool never did that before so if nothing else I leaned how to do that.

    but then and its a big but.. they hit you with a test at the end.. and its the rules of a cabbie basically so I flunked that.. they were shocked.. but I got to take it when I got home and only missed one the second time around.. so now I know when I pick someone up I am to turn the music down and greet them with a warm hello.. also I should not smoke in my car or allow others to.

    some other pearls.

    what I found interesting was the lady next to me was saying the reason she is doing it.

    is she works right by the airport.. so on her way to work she can pick someone up.. and when going home she is hoping she can take someone from airport towards her home.. thereby making money on her normal commute.. a few of the others said same thing they just want to pick folks up on the commute.   kind of reminds me of ride sharing over the SF bay Bridge only that's free car runs through the lot picks up 3 total strangers and now you get to go in the commuter lane.

    Will report back if I happen to get a whale in my car and score a new investor  LOL>  although I can see them saying RIGHT whats this guy doing driving lyft..

    PS any money earned with go to charity.

    @David Faulkner@Matt R.  PS I am going to make up a sign and put it in the car saying all revenue and tips go to charity and will pick some local ones the folks will know.. this could be cool.
