We found that doing higher-end stuff (not mansions, but $750K - $1.2K) was a sweek spot from a profitability standpoint.

I rented out a beach mansion in foreclosure for $5500 a month and was able to make $20k+ a month subleasing as a STR. 

Fortunately, he moved to FL after the sale, bought a mansion as his retirement home, and saved by the state's homestead laws.

I think it also depends on the cost of the unit - is it an efficiency at $50 a night or mansion at $1,500 a night.  

The "mansion" cabins are definitely slower this year. 

I mean Joe Montana is a very successful Developer same with Steve Young.. and Ronnie Lott has done well in RE also.but I bought a big mansion that was 3/4 done from an NBA star and he was not business savvy at all.. and on top of that had about 7 or 8 baby moma's all with child support judgements against him ..

Here's a side note, that rich guy who sank with the Titanic, and whose NYC mansion is now a luxury hotel (I can't remember the hotel's name, but I ate in his very fine, old study at a convention dinner once): Well, he owned a lot of working-class buildings.

The were clearly mansions at time of construct, and now converted small multi's all sec8.
