It will also depend on what was written in the contract, in Paragraph 6.D you have to write the objections, it is common practice to write what is going to be the use of the property there, e.g.

I was planning to send letters explaining the higher cost in taxes, market rents in the area, and then offer a gradual raise to meet in the middle somewhere.

If they agree, and if their asking price is reasonable you can explain what your offer is.

Call them up and explain the situation.  

If financial independence is the objective, then the income from your rentals has to meet certain requirements:Rents and prices need to rise faster than inflation.Operating costs must stay low.

I do not desire to reward tenants for poor behavior.I explain the consequences of an eviction to the tenant.
