Getting started in real estate investing

I’m currently on summer break and really want to do something like an internship or just get a feel for the day to day life of a real estate investor, how they find and close deals, how they run things, and just learn up close.

Books and videos help a little, but I feel like they only go so far. I want to understand the real ins and outs of the business. I also want to get better at networking and learn how to find investors who are willing to teach or let me observe what they do.

Start by offering value to active investors: help with lead generation, data entry, or property research. Local meetups, REI Facebook groups, and BiggerPockets are solid places to connect. Be upfront, you're looking to learn and support, not just shadow. Good luck!

@Robel Nessro join a local REI group.
Find someone in the business and yes, offer to work for them for free to learn, but find a way to add value to their business (without asking them how you add value). Observe their business and find ways you can make their life easier/more efficient. That is the best way to learn firsthand!

You can go to every local real estate meetup, introduce yourself to every investor, tell them what you're looking for, and tell them exactly what you're offering in return. Even if you tell them you'll do anything they need you're putting the burden on them to figure out what to do with you and creating another barrier to entry for you.
You could proactively drive for dollars and bring a list of pre vetted deals to the meetup, you can offer to maintain a properties yard and flower beds, you can power wash properties, you can offer to help prep properties between tenants, or any other number of things you think you could excel at.
You can also call all the small apartments of 4-20 units to try and get in touch with the owner to try and do the same thing.
