I just spent about $5700 on a gas boiler replacement but that included some changes to the venting. Without that my cost would have been around $5,250 I would guess.

WOW, thats crazy high. I see remove and replace furnace for 1700- 1900,,,,, 5500, why? It only cost about $700 for material
@Bob S., I see furnace and boiler used interchangeably. I guess I should have asked. Mine was a gas hot water boiler. They cost over $2k or so just for the boiler not counting other ancillary parts and obviously labor. Nobody is installing a boiler for a few hundred bucks.
I just googled and the average gas furnace costs $2250. I'm sure you can find a cheapie for closer to $1k. I don't think you are coming anywhere near $700 for materials.
You MIGHT be able to replace your furnace for $1700-1900 if you buy the cheapest and do all the work yourself.
@Bob S., I see furnace and boiler used interchangeably. I guess I should have asked. Mine was a gas hot water boiler. They cost over $2k or so just for the boiler not counting other ancillary parts and obviously labor. Nobody is installing a boiler for a few hundred bucks.

Yes BOILER makes a big difference, So you think I am just making the pricing up ? We buy 75- 90k BTW 80% efficiency gas furnace's that last 15- 20 years for about $ 700, (we typically buy 20 at a time and get them for about $550) labor nit more then $550- 600

BTW 6k is still crazy high for a boiler. Most people get ripped off. Last week a woman posted she paid 3k for a 50-gallon HW tank, That is ridiculous ,total rip off. You can buy them all day for about 600, install, 300. takes under 2 hours or so .

For a mid range furnace (carrier) I just got one put in for $3200. Inflation has prices on equipment up 30%.
Painting a house that size I would guess around 1500-2k+ paint

That $700 boiler is a ripoff. Double the price and it will last 3x as long plus you only spend on labor ONCE! My parents have had the same gas furnace for 40+ years.
I think the saying is "Penny wise, pound foolish".
BTW, boiler installs can run well more than $5k depending on who you hire and what you are installing. $7-9k is not out of the ballpark depending on what you are doing.
