Yes, That Just Happened...(Inspection Issue)

We've been fixing houses for a long time now in multiple cities and for lots of different exit strategies. Even though we have had thousands of inspections done on properties, we've never before had to face this issue! I am quoting directly from the inspection report that just came across my desk:

"The door bell did not operate properly at the time of inspection. The doorbell dings, but did not dong. The door bell should be serviced."

I get it that many people feel inspectors sometimes try to "justify" their existence by looking for every little thing. Sometimes that appears to be true. I personally have no problem with inspections or inspectors and we even have it in our contract that investors can order inspections on every purchase so there is always third party verification. But, IMO, this "urgent issue" is way over the top!

Any one else had crazy line items on their inspections that beat that one?

You must be selling high-end stuff...none of my entry-level buyers expect a DONG at our price points.

    That's a different perspective.

I wasn't the GC and wasn't on site. The job was fixed bid so I don't really care how many staples that they use. I thought it was over kill to red tag the site and if 12 inch staples is the minimum code then 6 is doubly good?

David Krulac - my fault. To be clear, I was being tongue-in-cheek and borrowing your words about gross negligence. So, I do think it is crazy for an inspector to make your contractor remove staples. And, I do think it is crazy for an inspector to stop work instead of telling your contractor good job for going above and beyond code.

I'm not as good with sarcasm on here as I thought! I am over laughing right now at my complete failure to bring a little humor to your plight. sorry about that!

Chris Clothier Speaking of humor, any chance your original post was just a prod, and that some of us missed it? An inspector calling out a missing dong, or even using the word dong in a report....is just too good to be true!

Ha! I wish! I will gladly post it for everyone to get a good laugh. My younger brother handles all of our closings and he walked in my office with a look of disbelief dropping the report on my desk and his phrase was "that just happened"! Of course, the investor had no interest in holding up a closing for that to be repaired, but it was really funny. That line was word for word what was written as a line item for repair on the inspection report.

Im sure the neighborhood kids hated it too they couldnt play ding dong ditch. Imagine the shock to the neighborhood when the kids showed up and hit the door bell and ran and all they heard was ding. The lack of dong had to be horrifying to say the least;)
Its things like this that let you breathe a sigh of relief when the deal your selling only needs a 50 dollar dong fix.
Its funny and this was amusing to read all the stories about every bodies experience in this matter. As a rehabber in this business I buy a lot of really old homes and I always spend time on the electrical and heating since those areas in my opinion can do so much towards saving lives.
