When looking for a Tax Consultant for your real estate business in your city/town that actually knows what they are doing, what are some questions you should ask? How do you know that they could be a good fit on your team? How much should you know before entering the discussions?

Great question, this is a crucial team member. Don't ask friends and family unless they are also active in real estate. Find a local real estate investor and ask who they would recommend. Make sure the tax professional specializes in helping clients who own, buy and sell real estate. Your local REIA Real Estate Investor's Association will have networking meetings where you can find other investors and accountants. Also check Meetup.com for local real estate events. When you do meet with someone, come to the consultation prepared with a good idea of your annual income, expenses separated for business vs. personal, as well as any numbers on the property (selling price or rental income).
