One of my tenants texted me that he has not received his paycheck yet due to the federal government shut down. I am certainly willing to work with him if that is true (even though his girl friend who is also on the lease is not in the military). But it sounds like it could be a BS story (he has been paying increasingly later over the past few months). He is in the Army and stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs if that matters. Anyone else having similar issues, and/or know whether this is true or false that Army personnel are not getting paychecks due to the federal government shut down?
@John Rooster , Call his unit and ask to speak to the First Sergeant. Not only will you get the truth about the Soldier's pay, the First Sergeant will provide that Soldier a little face to face mentorship about Army values.
Have him to show proof, and you verify. No proof starts the eviction process. Tenants in the military always think they can use the government not to pay.

A simple solution but it just seems like bad form to me to basicly accuse someone serving in the Military of lying to me, without first trying to verify his story elsewhere.

I am currently serving on the military. We are getting paid, but supposedly some accounts were delayed due to the late signing of the CR. Outside of the normal, legal, eviction processes you can contact me for some other options within the system. Good luck.
I'm a vet and whether he got paid or not I'd still hold him accountable. Unfortunately it is unpopular to say but many in the military now a days have an entitlement attitude and think that they can use the "military" excuse for everything. So I personally would tell him that is what savings are supposed to be for, and that come Mon you expect to have received rent or will be starting eviction.
FYI Oct 1 paychecks were funded in Sept meaning that they were prior to the shut down Oct 15 checks are the ones that would not be getting paid due to the shutdown.

While there was a bill passed to ensure military gets paid, there is a large possibility that the pay will be delayed. That being said, I personally received my 1 October pay. I'm not confident I will receive my pay on time on 15 October.
If your tenant typically pays by check through USAA, that company has already committed to give free payday loans to military members who have their direct deposits through them, so even if we don't get paid on time, if he has USAA, he would have.
As @John Andruszka Mentioned, I would suggest calling his First Sergeant as that is the person you will be able to get an answer from and most likely get paid.
Agreeing with the above posters here. My j.o.b. is a self-employed business. 60-70% of my clients are military. Each of their checks for October are paid and fine.
So, if someone works for XYZ Corporation and says they've been laid off and aren't getting a paycheck so they're not going to pay, what would you do? You'd start an eviction! Its not your responsibility to "work with someone" when they're not getting paid or investigate their story. The grocery store and gas station doesn't work with someone when they don't get paid.
Now, that said, I have had tenants have problems with money. We discuss them and agree on a date and the amount due, which always includes late fees. Not an indefinite delay, either.
Excellent point, @Matt Devicenzo! The military is about as stable a paycheck as you can get, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have any savings.
@Jason Minnich, I'm not sure there is a large possibility the military pay will be delayed. I only have 17 years in now (including more than one gov't shutdown), but I've never missed a paycheck. It's the worst press a congressperson could get to have the military not get paid, especially when you have troops in harm's way.
With all that said, the DoD is supposed to be back to work on Monday, including all civilians, so it should be a mute point now.
Mil pay is not paid in advance, Oct 1 checks were on appropriations in Sept and the govt was not shut down. Wire funds went out and checks were cut the last of Sept for Oct payroll, effective for Oct on deposits before any shut down was known, so he's pulling the wool over your eyes, however he may have had a concern about paying other future bills, no idea what his reason was and it could be he didn't receive enough if he gets mid-month pay.
You can certainly verify at his company, you might get a bit of a run around too so you cn get the gospel from calling the Military Pay Section at Ft. Carson Finance Center, they can tell you if pay went out for Oct 1. My last bit in the Army was as a Finance Officer. :) .
