I have a 2.5 story apartment building in Minnesota. Working on renovating the units to higher end. Currently the two main stairwells are carpeted and the back stairwell is linoleum.
The building was built as two separate buildings over the years. As a result, 6 of the units will be gutted and wall have wall to wall LVP flooring. For the stairwell on that side I was thinking LVP for the stairs and risers with a metal grip strip. On the other side the renovation is less extensive and I am refinishing the original hardwood floors and installing tile in the kitchen/bath. Should I install the same type of flooring on the two stairwells associated with those units? I'm looking for durability, cost-effectiveness, and safety. Carpet doesn't seem like it would go with the overall plan. Tile seems unsafe. I am wondering if there are any other good options that I am overlooking?
I shied away from LVP on the treads because if the seam popped it could be a deadly hazard. I used the 12x24 click vinyl planks so the only seam was perpendicular to the tread.
Here is what we did in the past: Solid wood threads, don't have to be expansive wood. Pine is fine. Plastic or rubber runner, covering almost the whole step. We took our time to install it with embedded nuts in the step and bolts instead of screws. Hardware is matching the color of the rails. It is safe, durable, and can be easily replaced, whole or in sections. Clear plastic with pattern insures traction and let's color of the painted steps come through. I wish I had pictures.
