Hello everyone. I'm looking to purchase my first property...a duplex in Los Angeles. Can anyone suggest where I might look (website, hotline, housing authority) to find the most accurate information about landlord and tenant rights in my area, and where to find out if a certain property is rent controlled? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Danny Farrell, Congrats on your first property! We purchased a rent-controlled duplex in LA and the following sites were very handy:

http://hcidla.lacity.org/RSO-Overview - Rent Stabilization Overview
http://hcidla.lacity.org/Resources-for-All-Rental-... - Overview of CA law

http://zimas.lacity.org/  - LA zoning

Let me know if you have any questions or need recommendations for great RE lawyers.

Hope this helps!

I'm a member of the Apartment Owners Association. They have a monthly magazine with helpful information. Their website also has downloadable forms that I use all the time, plus I do my credit checks through them. They offer free or low cost classes on different topics throughout the year.

Your local Fair Housing agency should be offering free trainings for landlords.  It is also an educational and enlightening experience to sit in on eviction court in your locality.
