How strict are you with people keeping a place clean?Not so much as with food spilled and left out but more with clothes thrown on the floor stuff not being put on the shelf just piled up in the middle of the

Statistically speaking security deposit dispositions are the number one reason landlords are sued. I would make sure I have very good policies and procedures of what is considered wear and tear & what is considered damage and how the house is expected to be left up on returning back to you
you may want to have something in writing that states what your expectations are so that there’s no question when they leave.

Don't really care unless bugs start showing up but that is usually from food. This is more important in multifamily than SFR since the pests can migrate to other units.

How does this impact your ability to provide them a safe and liveable place to live as a landlord?

if you can't stomache that mess and it stresses you, hire a property manager.
as others said, how they live, is their problem. Damages come off the deposit.
that is WHY you rip carpet and install laminate or somesuch on rentals, because many are slobs and will stain away.

IMO renters with high FICO scores are more organized and neater from my experience. However, its not always a given. A good rule of thumb is to walk a prospective renter to his or her car and see how neat it is on the inside. If you see clothing and all sorts of clutter in the cabin, you know your apartment or house will be worse. I rent to people who are neat and clean freaks only. Most of my tenants are neater than me. For example you wont find dust on the baseboards they are so neat.

Some people are slobs. Ignore it as long as it doesn't cause a health hazard, attract pests, interfere with the neighbors, or cause damage to the home.
Living like a slob is often a red flag of other issues like unpaid rent, loss of employment, drug/alcohol abuse, etc. Keep a close eye on them.
