My wife and I have a rental condo in Las Vegas where the water heater is integrated into the central forced air heating system. The water heater started leaking earlier this week and went through the wall and into the carpeting of the adjacent bedroom. We do have a warranty on the condo, and while they’re going to replace the water heater, they’re saying that because it’s this aquatherm system, it’s much more expensive than a standard water heater and we’re going to come out of pocket much more than expected. Anyone have any experience with this? What’s the process and what sort of pricing should we expect?

I hadn't seen one of these systems until last month and an apartment we were looking to buy had these 100%. I researched them spent 30 minutes on the phone with our HVAC guy getting his opinion.
The ones I saw were hooked up to a regular hot water tank. So, if the tank goes, you replace it with another regular hot water tank. That is all you should have to replace. They may have to move some plumbing connections around but it shouldn't be much more than a regular water tank.
I understand that some systems have a water heating system separate from the hot water. If that is the case, it may get pricey. Also, if something is broken on the HVAC side, that could add a lot of cost. For example if they have to replace the hot water coil or the recirc pump that could add up. But, if they are just replacing the tank, it shouldn't cost much more.

Those systems are very common in the Vegas market. Installed the prices range from $1900-2300 from what I’ve seen. They are different than a standard water heater, so don’t try to skimp by replacing with the wrong unit.
