Got a question for you folks. I'm not in a position where I "need" to go back to work....but I am kind of bored and I've always been involved in community projects, scouting leader, coast guard auxilliary, pheasants forever, etc.... I'm thinking of getting back to some sort of work, but not corporate - more of a public service aspect. Any of you done that? What were the challenges you faced?

I love it! I have seen it firsthand in the Chicago investing circle.

I am a political junkie and have thought about serving my country by going into politics. However, I have a real bad habit of saying what is on my mind without running it through a verbal filter. I don't think I could go very far telling the truth all the time.

I have thought about running for office with the slogan:

Elect Jeff, he will steal less than the last guy!

    I think it would work.......

    My slogan would be...

"The candidate that actually earned a living before running for office"

Does working for my church count as public service. We are one of those that receive zero pay, all volunteer.

On that note, I just found a clip that maked Mike Tooley's suggestion sound even better:

How about volunteering for one of your city's boards? Get your feet wet in politics without going through the whole election thing. Admittedly this will be easier to get a spot if you live in a suburb vs. a major city. I just started on our city's planning and zoning commission and it's definitely interesting to me, plus we get a larger voice in how the future of our city turns out. If you have no interest in these sort of things, then it may bore you to tears, although there are other boards with different functions than just P&Z.

If you are looking for something that is part time and very flexible, you might get involved with an orphanage. We are sponsors for a local children's home. We take one or two kids at a time and they stay with our family on holidays and some weekends. It gives them a chance to get out of the group home setting and into a family setting. It is a great way to make a difference one child at a time. One of the girls we sponsored is now in college and still considers us her family. There are few things that feel as good as knowing that you have made a positive difference in someone's life.
I do have to say that the fireman thing does sound about perfect for you just from the little I know from your posts. Best of luck with your decision.

Why not start a company that will benefit you as an realestate investor? like a hauling company, contracting etc etc etc. Its very fulfilling starting your own company, creating local jobs. Not to mention the business never has to "make money" that it self is a tax benefit. Plus many of the items you buy for the business you will use for REI. For example you start a hauling company, you have dumptrucks whenever you need for gutting houses, cleanups whatever. If you really want to help people create jobs.
