Jobs Look Strong… But the Full Story Says Otherwise
Week of March 30, 2026 — Market Update
At first glance, the job market looks strong but when you dig a little deeper… the story changes. At the same time, home prices continue to quietly rise.
📊 The Jobs Report Looks Strong But It’s Misleading
The latest report showed 178,000 jobs added, far above expectations.
Unemployment also dropped slightly to 4.3%.
Sounds great… but here’s the issue:
👉 Other data doesn’t agree.
- ADP showed just 62,000 jobs added
- Another report showed closer to 19,000
- Previous months have been heavily revised
What this means: The headline number looks strong but the trend underneath is inconsistent.
👉 The job market isn’t booming… it’s uneven.
🧠 Hiring Is Happening But Only in Certain Areas
Looking closer, most job growth is coming from:
- Small businesses
- Healthcare and education
Meanwhile:
- Mid-sized companies are cutting jobs
- Larger companies are pulling back
Even pay trends are shifting:
- Job switchers still earn more
- But the gap is shrinking fast
Bottom line: The job market is becoming less competitive overall
⚠️ Other Signals Point to a Cooling Market
Several indicators are telling the same story:
- Job openings are down significantly from peak levels
- Continuing unemployment claims remain elevated
- Layoffs are still happening at a steady pace
There’s also something most people miss:
👉 More workers are turning to gig or contract work instead of filing for unemployment
Which makes the labor market look stronger than it actually is.
What this means: The labor market is slowly cooling… just not in an obvious way.
🏡 Home Prices Keep Rising (Even With All This)
While the economy sends mixed signals, housing is staying surprisingly steady.
- Home prices have now risen for 6 straight months
- Up about 0.9% year-over-year
- Roughly 3.3% annualized pace
That may not sound huge but it adds up:
👉 A $500K home gaining 3% = $15K in one year
Bottom line: Even in a “weird” market… real estate is still building wealth.
🧠 The Real Takeaway (This Is What Matters Most)
Right now we have:
- A job market that looks strong on the surface
- But is quietly losing momentum underneath
- And a housing market that remains stable
That combination is important.
👉 Slower hiring can eventually help rates but limited housing supply continues to support prices
📅 What I’m Watching This Week
This week actually matters 👇
- PCE Inflation (Thursday)
- CPI Inflation (Friday)
- Jobless claims + GDP data
👉 These reports will likely determine the next move in mortgage rates
📉 Technical Snapshot (Simplified)
- Mortgage rates are pushing higher
👉 Translation: rates are still under pressure short term
🎯 What This Means for You
Here’s the mistake I’m seeing right now:
People are waiting for 1 of three things:
- “Clear signals”
- “Better timing”
- “Lower rates”
But this market isn’t giving clean signals.
It’s mixed.
And in markets like this the best opportunities usually show up quietly
👇 If You’re Thinking About Buying Or You Work In The Industry
The move isn’t trying to time this perfectly.
It’s:
- Understanding the direction
- Running the numbers
- Having a strategy
If you want help breaking down scenarios (now vs later), I’m happy to walk through it.
