Any tips for becoming a future real estate investor?

Hello everyone!

My name is Makayla Kelly, and I am a junior in college. I am majoring in business, and I have a passion for real estate. I have read many books, such as, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki as which gave me the dreams of one day becoming financially stable and free. I understand it takes hard work, dedication and trial and error. I am hoping to get some tips, recommendations and hopefully finding a mentor who can help guide me to the right path for becoming a future real estate investor.

1. Should I become a real estate agent before becoming a real estate investor?

1. This depends on your goals (short & long term), skillset and interests. If you're not interested in RE sales specifically, getting your license might not be the best thing to do. You also do not NEED your RE license in order to be an investor.

That being said, here are many routes within the RE industry that you can take - RE Attorney, property manager, project manager, Realtor, construction, and more.

You may find that a career in finance, marketing, the restaurant industry, or any other field can get you to your RE investing goal sooner.

2. Yes, becoming a Realtor can set a good foundation for your investing business. You'll learn about your local market, learn the transaction process and learn the power of having a good team.

I chose the Realtor route. It allowed me to quit my 9-5, work daily with RE professionals and with investors. I've learned a ton about the industry and my local market. This was the best route for me but again, it totally depends on your strengths and interests.

Majority of real estate agents know nothing about real estate investing. They are totally different worlds. You certainty don’t need to become an agent to become a successful investor.

It is certainly for learning about the industry and networking with other professionals. However, you do not need a license to do achieve your RE education and networking goals.

That being said, if you intend to use your license to help homeowners, potential homeowners and sellers, you can earn while you learn.
