The process is highly localized. I build in Philadelphia, but I am certain the civil engineering, permitting, inspection, and construction processes differ significantly from Orlando. If Orlando is the market where you intend to build, I would focus on connecting with developers and builders who have completed projects in that specific market.
I would also recommend partnering on a project in a capacity that gives you full visibility into the process, from due diligence and permitting through site work and vertical construction. In my experience, there is no substitute for learning by being directly involved in an actual project from start to finish.
