Some of the hoods like the ones that mount to the underside of the cabinet are very simple to install.  

This removes any chances the smell could leach out from the under side or thru the paint.

But if its a tight fit I find light gauge steel plate epoxied to the underside is even more effective.Also if there is a 'sinkerator' attached to the sink the vibration could be an issue so the extra support is a wise move.good luck

A vinyl U Channel is stapled to the underside of the outside wall that the sheet (cut to size - 1" below grade and 1/2" below lower wall.

Here we do get a bunch of rain so it's important to have proper gutters and down spouts pull raind away from the property.Have you looked up in the attic to see the underside condition of the roof??
