Hi Gang,

I wanted to get everyone's take on this.  I'm not one to generally take to heart what other people say that are either a) not in my shoes or b) don't have words of wisdom from prior experience but I've been running into this a lot.

Whenever I mention to someone that I'm educating myself into real estate investing and plan to make my move at the beginning of the year, I get a good amount of negative responses, basically saying it's an unwise decision.  This is not only from people outside of the business but some people that have done it.  I'm not one to get deterred easily but more often than not when you get that sort of response, ones natural reaction is to second guess.

My question is how does/has everyone handled this "barrier to entry" for someone starting off.  Any words of wisdom or prior experiences that you've encountered that could be beneficial is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

First Tony, their words of "wisdom" are not a barrier to entry...at least not a barrier to you.  They are a barrier to them.

Second, don't worry about it.  If you are looking for encouragement from them you'll never get it.  Trust me though, when (not if), you make your first million, they will be the 2nd to notice.

I always use this story when presented with the same scenario you stated above:

"An exit survey was done after a REI presentation to 100 people. The 1st 99 to leave the room, when asked if they like the presentation, and if they were going to move forward with what they saw said "no".  The reasons varied from the usual, "my brother..., my uncle..., I know someone...,  I tried it before and..., to my favorite,..."everybody knows".  It's been my experience this person named "everybody" usually knows nothing, but is the most common "expert" on all that is...and probably the biggest killer of dreams.

The last person to leave was asked the same questions.  The response was the exact opposite.  "Yes, I have done this program, I will continue to do this program, I have retired using this program, and the only reason I'm here is to learn more about this program".

So, what's the moral of the story?  Easy.  Most people would rather follow the failures, because they are in the majority, than the successful, because they are not the majority".

So, don't listen to the Nay Sayers, unless you want to be just like them.

Those people do not qualify.  Love them but say nothing.  My 2 cents.
