I'm new to REI and also recently discovered that my parents are willing to fund a project or two as I am starting out. Would you recommend getting family involved earlier in your process or wait until you have a little more experience?

A source of funds is always beneficial. You would need to take care to treat the funds very carefully as you should no matter the source of them. Make sure to put everything in writing for your sake and theirs. Even if it's family business needs to be treated as such.
