Hello BP,
I was just wondering how many of you have told your boss and/or co-workers about your real estate business.
I have not mentioned real estate investing to anyone at work for many reasons. One reason is that they might think that I am not fully devoted to my current role.
For those whose boss/co-workers know what you do on the side, what was the result of you informing them about your side business?
For those who have not told your boss/co-workers, what is your reasoning for not telling about the side business?
I do not tell anyone. I work in business with primarily people older than parents and one time I mentioned I had a boat in conversation and they would not let that go.
Justin I spilt my coffee laughing so hard. What do you mean by wouldn't let it go.... They thought you may get hurt in the boat? Or were they jealous you have a boat?
I'm a newbie so I haven't said a word to my boss and I never will. Besides I work at a place where gossip runs rampant so it wouldn't be wise to mention my real estate business. Also I hope to fire my boss one day and do real estate full time someday.
About 15 years ago I used to talk to people at work a lot about my investing. Later my director (2 levels above me) asked me if I might have a place to rent his nephew. The nephew was living with him at the time and was looking for a job after dropping out of college.
The drama of having to evict my director's deadbeat nephew was too scary to risk. I made sure that I never had anything that he'd be interested in.
Now I talk about real estate in very general terms to fellow employees I know very well.
CL I am a younger guy in a consulting management type role and work with older people (60s). They just acted like i was a punk with a boat. This was a few years ago I do not work there anymore.
I mentioned it at work and found some guys that I didn't usually talk to before had the same goals as me. Now we talk on a regular basis about real estate and what we have coming up. We are even looking at doing a deal together soon. I think its a great idea unless you think that your boss would think you are not devoted enough.
In the late 90's I was a low ranking Active Duty Air Force enlisted member, and I was working in MIL Intelligence, One day, after watching late night TV I purchased a Carrolton Sheets course (How to buy properties no money and no credit) and six months later I was i was buying 2-3, 4 properties in middle class suburban areas, with no money down, $100/ cash flows and about 10-15% instant equities in each home. This was so exiting to me that i was sharing my excitement with everyone in the office/ or anyone who asked. Even used my enlistment bonus ($20K) to buy a few more houses) ... i was in may late 20s did not know any better....
The end result was when i finished my enlistment a few years later and I had a "going a way party" almost no-one showed up but a few people! That is when i realized that jealousy exists! I was treated like someone just won the lottery. I still have those properties, and a few more, but i almost never talk about them anymore? What for?
